Re: Thanks to Tiburon dev Clint Oldenburg, #NFLdropEA is trending on Twitter

Sorry for the double post, but hope this will save some time. I judge the merits of a persons critiques based on the merit of their argument, not their history. I don't care if a person never played a down of football in their life, if they argue that some aspect is unrealistic and subpar and can intelligently and effectively demonstrate that, then they have credibility.

If they simply say "Madden is trash" and maybe offer vague reasons as to why I disregard their input, regardless of their background.

Based on your posts it appears as if two people disagree on the quality of the game you will side with the person that has NFL experience. I strongly disagree with that.

Further, given your statements I'd like to ask what business OS has reviewing Madden. What NFL team or position with EA has the reviewer had? I can't seem to find that info. And according to you, if he has neither it would be extremely arrogant of him to evaluate the dev team's performance right?

Finally, if that is your position I hope you accept that it must go both ways. If I can't criticize the performance of the devs because I'm not qualified to do so it stands to reason that I likewise cannot praise them right?

But fine, let me also amend my statement to add "or coached" in the NFL; Belichick has been an NFL coach for literally half a century and has cultivated a deep and thorough knowledge of NFL football in part due to his constant close proximity to the league and sport.

The point of my statement is that none of us in this thread have that combined close proximity to NFL and Madden that Clint Oldenburg does, given he literally and quite uniquely has work experience at both places, so it would be profoundly arrogant of us to attempt to evaluate how he is performing at his job of Madden NFL senior gameplay designer.
I hope you haven't evaluated the performance of presidents, coaches, AD's, politicians, teachers, managers, chefs, servers/bartenders, professional athletes, actors without having been in all of those positions then.

FWIW there are people on this forum that have used the Frosty editor to fix a lot of these glaring gameplay issues as well as improving franchise mode (even though its on the 20 version) so it's definitely possible. If they can do that, why can't a company like EA?

I - respectfully - could not possibly disagree with you any more on this.

As someone who played four years HS ball, then coached "minor league" football for 7 years I would posit that while experience with the game certainly gives you some insight into the game, it also - in many ways - makes you a bit myopic in your scope of the game.

I have made a career in the app dev world since and would argue that having development experience and a solid understanding of the technology, its capabilities and its limitations is just as important - if not more - when making a tech/game simulation of the sport.

Just my opinion of course... YMMV

In CM's defense he was saying that Clint's combined NFL experience and development experience together is what sets him apart.

Like I said, it's the "stick to football" argument in the opposite direction. It's simply lazy.
