I have watched videos of 2k5 discussing the better animations. What I saw was interesting. As an example I saw a receiver make a catch behind a cornerback only for that cornerback to dive parallel to the ground, miss the receiver by a yard if not more and the receiver fall forward as if he was hit. Yet the YouTuber insisted how much better that game is than any Madden to ever exist because of animations like this.

I get 2k5 was deeper franchise wise. NBA 2k is deeper than Madden so that is not surprising. But there is also a certain point of asking is this depth needed and impacts the mode or just busy work like the hot dog price setting in MLB the Show that had no impact so was removed.

My point is that nostalgia and age can skew our views behind how good or bad games were.

As an example. I got a mini super Nintendo 2 years ago and thought that super Mario kart was the greatest racing game of all time. I played it for a few before I realized nostalgia clouded me feelings on it and I was way off base. My kids also informed me too. Only 8 characters to choose from? Weak...

The same could be said about Madden in this era. That it is much better and deeper than today because of things like the vision cone and the training session things that frankly got tedious.

I don't think anyone is wrong here one way or the other. I also did stop playing Madden 22 pretty quickly into the year and haven't touched any Madden since last October and not buying any more maddens in the future.

    Just my long .02 cents.
I agree with a lot of what you said here. But Super Mario Kart is still amazing lol

Both games are difficult to play now because they are simply old and outdated games. However, relative to when they released, both Madden 05 and NFL 2k5 were very good to great games. I don't feel that way at all with Madden now. Madden each release since moving to the 360/PS3 has been meh at best relative to the time it came out.

Madden may do a few things better now than it ever did back in its heyday, but overall the entire product simply isn't as fun, and it doesn't have the quality for a game today that Madden 05 had for a game back then.

Sports games for the most part all suffer from this. It isn't purely an EA issue. MLB The Show also continues to suffer from not having any monumental changes to the series making it feel more stale with each release. I think a lot of the issues with sports games these days has to do with the requirement to release annually. Games are far too complex now for an 8 month dev cycle to work like it did 15+ years ago on the PS2.

That doesn't excuse these developers. NBA 2k is far from a perfect series, but it dwarfs any other sports series right now with regards to how much content the game has. You can argue whether or not you like the way it plays on the court, I personally believe on the court NBA 2k21 and 2k22 are the best playing sports games of all time, but that's simply my opinion. I also believe MLB The Show is an amazing game on the field, it's the off the field aspects that really hurt that game. I even believe Madden on the newest generation of consoles played very well on the field, arguably the best the series ever had, before EA patched a lot of things to appease the online crowd.

The annual cycle excuse also doesn't give EA a free pass. We've seen that their company as a whole is struggling and at times looks like they are intentionally killing some of their most well known franchises. It is no secret what they did to Mass Effect or Battlefield or Live or Madden and so on. EA as a company is making worse and worse games, but they are raking in the cash so it doesn't really matter.

My overall point, though, is basically that relative to when they released, Madden 05 and NFL 2k5 were amazing games. Nowadays Madden games are not that great relative to their times. I know I just said the annual cycle isn't a complete excuse for EA, but I do believe it doesn't help any. I would love to see what Madden would be like if EA figured out how to change their current development process.

Maybe the College Football game and another potential Live reboot will show us whether or not EA having additional time to develop a game makes a significant difference in quality or not.

Also PGA Tour which was just delayed.

        Re: NFL2K5 vs Madden 2005

The whole point of sports games since their inception was to simulate the real thing as closely as possible...the ps2 era was the first time sports games remotely resembled actual sports gameplay-wise and devs strived to make the games as realistic as possible with the many limitations they faced...keep in mind back then developers would compensate for these limitations by implementing arcade style/gimmick modes into games that made them more fun and thats part of the nostalgia people have for the ps2 era...fast forward to now and a lot of these games are close to being maxed-out graphically and when devs put arcade/gimmick style modes in the game they get criticized for not focusing enough on realism...madden 05 and nfl 2k5 displayed
a perfect balance of realism and gimmicks and with the limitations of the hardware people were given the illusion that things were better than they actually were...in 2022 nfl 2k5 and madden 05 are obsolete, bottom line

Both games had their strengths and weaknesses. It's 2022, however. I'd love to see where football gaming would be today if the competition never ceased to exist, but that's not what timeline we're in. We're in a 2022 where Madden is all we get annually, and has been all we've gotten annually for the last near 17 years. We all know how that's gone as well. EA has had many flops over the years, and it would be fair to say that the series has not reached its potential since they got the exclusive rights.
I think you're sort of missing the point. What I'm getting at is that I also played Madden 2005, 20 years after it was released and I still enjoy it til this day, but NFL 2K5, not so much. The Franchise mode in 2K5 leaves a lot to be desired when compared to Madden. 2K5 is a better looking game and has better presentation, but it ends there. At the end of the day though, as you mentioned, 2K5, like Madden is an older game and honestly I can only stand to play Madden 2005 for a couple of Franchise years at a time before the graphics wear on me, and I play a more recent title like Madden 12 (PS3) or Madden 25 (PS4). Hopefully EA makes a game worth my $60 sometime in the near future, otherwise, myself and many others will continue bouncing between the older titles.

I see what you're getting at more clearly now. I think it is still tough to judge the games at this point. What they were when they came out isn't close to what they are now many years later.

As for enjoying one or the other over the other, it's all opinion. I can't really play either at this point as both show too much age for me. I personally enjoyed 2k5, but I have always preferred the way 2k games have played versus EA games. 2k doesn't do everything perfect and Madden did some things better, but, for me, 2k5 was worth the hype and more, but I understand others won't agree.

I’ll put it like this, if Madden 06 was what it was supposed to be, a lot less people would be talking about nfl 2k5 today

Yeah I hear you, I don't play it as much now since I recently picked up a PS3, so that I could try Madden 12 and NCAA Football 14. The graphics of those games hold up much better for obvious reasons and they still offer a relatively decent franchise mode. One of these days, EA is going to put together a complete football. Just wait. LOL
