Re: Two Weeks of Madden 09, and Official Patch News!
Also that statement sounds nice but its not practical when you have contractually mandated deadlines and a billion dollar business. I would love to see Peter Moore go to his shareholders (Full disclosure: I'm one and I also own 2k stock) and explain that EA had to miss its release date causing EA to breach its exclusive agreement with the NFL, cost the company thousands of dollars and caused the share price to drop because a few hundred (if that many) people on a few internet boards were complaining about missing or broken features. All things that can be fixed later with a patch.
But here is the rub: I'm not a shareholder. I don't care about EA's business plan. As a consumer of sports video game, the annual development cycle has only resulted in more and more pain and less and less reward for me. I'm not obligated to buy a product year after year, especially when long-term problems never get fixed and each new release seems more unstable out of the box. (Does any serious sports gamer not view the massive reports of in-game and out-of-game freezes and actual console failures associated with the release of Madden 09 as an ominous sign of things to come for the industry?) I just want a stable game that works as described.
After several years of Madden disappointment, Tiger Wood releases that seem to offer less and less each year, and botched MLB2K games, I've gotten off the carousel. I have chosen not to be a victim of the annual development cycle.
No more Madden holidays, no more buying any sports game on the first day of release. I buy a sports game only when it reaches a point of stability and value that makes it worth buying -- and my purchase that year does not obligate me to buy the next version of the same product next year. The fact that this year's version of NBA2k is, post-patch, finally good enough doesn't mean that I'm buying the version coming out this fall. I am not obligated to spend $60 for marginal upgrades. It also means that as a die-hard baseball fan with a 360, I have no baseball game, because, well, don't get me started on the MLB2k series. It also means that I'm a long way from purchasing Madden 09, and if they never get this release right, even further away from purchasing 2010.
Again, I'm a realist. The annual development cycle works for EA -- they make a ton of money on repeat business for marginal upgrades and increasingly unstable releases. I'm just not obligated to be a victim of that cycle. And as a guy who is a serious sports gamer, I don't think I'm doing my hobby a favor by buying into the industry's business practices.Comment

Re: Two Weeks of Madden 09, and Official Patch News!
[Funny because I said the same thing last year which is how I convinced myself to buy this years version. "People" complain bc they expect to pay for a functional game. The franchise mode is worse than it was last year and they have failed to address the problem. I can't get past preseason in Season 4.]
I have been as critical as anyone these last 2 weeks and haven't played Madden since Wednesday the 13th because I ONLY play Franchise Mode and with the Progression/editing glitches it was unplayable to me.
I am very happy and impressed these issues have been resolved along with the many others listed. I don't understand how people can complain about what wasn't in the patch, they did a GREAT deal of work for 2 weeks time. I can't wait to start playing again when this patch drops.
I understand that there's other issues that some people still need to be addressed BUT I hope they appreciate what we ARE getting. This is not the usual efficiency and customer service we are used to getting from EA. I for one greatly appreciate this new more transparent and professional way they are doing business. They are listening to the consumer and working to perfect the product. Will they get to everything this year? Maybe not but I have a MUCH better feeling about reserving Madden 2010 (which I'm sure will have a much improved Franchise Mode).
Thanks to Ian and everyone else involved.[/quote]Comment

Re: Two Weeks of Madden 09, and Official Patch News!
I understand that EA has adopted, as a business strategy, the annual development cycle and has committed huge resources, such as paying for its exclusive agreement with the NFL, that make meeting those deadlines essential. If I was a shareholder, I'd be upset if they blow their deadlines.
But here is the rub: I'm not a shareholder. I don't care about EA's business plan. Re: Two Weeks of Madden 09, and Official Patch News!
all games have glitches - some companies don't act on them at all and some act by releasing patches. Some of the most played games like World of Warcraft, MSG4, GTA, Halo 3, etc were released with glitches even after YEARS of work on them. With your line of logic no one should by games.
But my main thing about this thread is the excessive gratitutde. I don't get it. Folks are acting like EA did them a favor. All EA did was fix the broken game they sold. This is the attitude that will cause the problem to continue. EA should be thanking their customers for willingly putting up with these issues.
I do not doubt that. As active as he's been, I can imagine how good '10 will be. He's acknolwledge my 2 main issues with the game. If the blocking interaction and WR/DB interaction are addressed like he promised, it will be the 90s all over again for me. I'm looking forward to him living up to the quotes in my sig.Shout out to The Watcher! Where you at bruh?Comment

Re: Two Weeks of Madden 09, and Official Patch News!
We here at Operation Sports represent a very small, but vocal segment of Madden players. We also hold sports titles to a higher standard than those in the general public.
I know several people, who are more "casual" gamers, who love Madden '09 as is. They think it's the best football title they've ever played. And, truth be told, I think the game is damn good myself.
You get the sense, from reading some of these posts, that the game is unplayable in its unpatched state. And that just isn't true.
Now, two weeks after release, the Madden team releases not only a list of items fixed for the second patch but several items for a DLC "Sim" experience; items we here in the "hardcore" community screamed and shouted for...
...and we're still ungrateful?
I'm sorry, but that isn't right. No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to play or buy Madden '09. And, I think some need to stop acting like they personally "deserve" something. It's repulsive.Comment

People without xbox live or psn(I'm not one of those but they need to be spoken for as well) are absolutely screwed because they have no way to obtain any of these things and that means that they are missing out on some of these game saving things that the rest of us are getting. I think people would not have such a problem with these things if the game had not gone gold so early. They should not have the game go gold until it is perfect(or at least as perfect as it can be) because not everyone is able to obtain these patches. Obviously there are things that cannot be helped such as Brett Favre changing teams 3 weeks before the game comes out but things like franchise progression and freezing after so many seasons.
Another thing that seems to be a problem is how EA seems to be all about what they can put on the box. 85+ new features? Does this include things like Resume Franchise which will save you an all important and valuable three seconds when loading. They need to focus on the important things and stop trying to entice people with big numbers and non-features, and fix the game. It's nice that someone from EA are trying to communicate with us, but if these things that they are talking about are not acted upon, there are going to be a whole new generation of EA haters come this time next year. I am like everyone else: I know I have the choice of not buying the game but I really have hope for EA every year; and I really believe they will fix this next year but I won't be holding my breath.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Two Weeks of Madden 09, and Official Patch News!
Thanks for the info on Patch #2, but what I'm now hoping/waiting for is the SIM DLC pack. This absolutely needs to be released... and soon. I seriously hope the CPU sliders are added and are more effective because the CPU running game needs major help. I've tried even tried the "DUMMY" slider thing with the CPU RUN at 0 (100,100,100) and the HUM RUN D at 20 (0,0,0) and the CPU still can't run the ball.Comment

lol bezo, have you ever played any other games other than madden? all games have glitches - some companies don't act on them at all and some act by releasing patches. Ian is on his way to being the greatest madden producer ever!
You pay $60 because the developers worked hard to put this game out. The testers are the idiots for not finding these issues. Now we may not know, but they could have been found and ignored by EA. This has happened before. Remember I use to work for EA and I tested a few major games like Tigerwoods and Sims 2. If someone found a bug and we were near deadline, they would let it go and deal with it after release. But... the problem was always fixed afterwords which is what they're trying to do now. Why the game came out with MAJOR issues is something we'll never know.
Suck it up and move on. Let's hope 2 weeks from now we all have smiles on our faces. Remember, failure each year means giving up the NFL license and allowing other companies to produce football games.Comment
