In context, that's just saying that 2K can only do non-simulation NFL games. Granted, you have to assume they'd want to do an XFL 2K22 or USFL 2K22 simulation football game, but they could without affecting the NFL license terms since those wouldn't apply to non-NFL videogames.

Nevermind, I just realized you were probably responding about the sales numbers for APF2K8.

Nowhere in the release does it say anything about "non simulation NFL games." That is something that is coming from people who don't want to believe what is says.

It literally says a non simulation football experience.

Someone earlier in this thread said it best and I think it was Kanobi but not sure. Our best hope is for 2K to make one great game that get's the NFL to open up the license to some degree.

The other question is what "simulation" means but the second 2K signed into those licenses with the NFL was the second any hope for a true simulation football game (for any league) went out the window.

I agree with that. As much as I want a simulation alternative, I'm not naive and in denial with the situation we are in.

The best bet is for 2k to make a great game and hit the ground running. If they could put a dent in the market, the NFL will notice. But, I do have my doubts that it will ever open up. I don't think a NFL Playgrounds will sell well despite 2k's brand being better than what it was around the 2k8 era. If 10+ million copies are good sales number for an annual sports game, than maybe if they could hit around 5+ million, maybe that could have an impact.

But I think the NFL's presence for exclusive licenses, is the main reason I see it not open up. Madden annually sells well and continually sells better each year despite negative press. EA has the pockets to pay whatever the NFL wants. I think EAs deal was a 5+1 extension. Where if they hit the sales benchmark by year 5, it'll unlock the 6th year which would be 2026 I believe. Unless it was an unattainable number, Madden is likely to reach it. If it gets to the point where they get that extra year, there's no reason for NFL to open it unless 2k is putting a serious dent in the football game market. Unless it is a Papa John's situation where they're a blemish on the NFL's brand, Madden's "bad press" isn't an issue when they are very profitable for the NFL

Another thing you might think is why aren't there more AAA publishers want to get into the sports games market over the past decade or so. Outside of Racing games and PES(Konami), for the American major sports games, it is essentially just EA Sports, 2k Sports, and Sony San Diego as the main AAA sports publishers. The cost of everything as skyrocketed over the last decade plus. It is was a different time in the 6th generation where almost everyone wanted a piece of the pie. The cost of Sports licenses have skyrocketed than what it once was. 2k had a 7 year 1.1 billion deal for the non-exclusive NBA license 2 years ago, which is over $150M a year. Madden agreed to a 5 year 1.5B deal for the exclusive sim license, which is around $300M a year. Not to mention Cost of Development, Marketing, etc. Not too many AAA are willing to invest that much money a year just to get a piece of the pie. We don't know the status of NBA Live. EA can easily afford the NBA License, but with a failed series, it's like burning money to maintain that license for EA. Even if an AAA publisher is willing to invest that type of money, they are starting from scratch. As much as people hate Madden, it would take YEARS just to get to Madden's current level and by then Madden would already be years ahead of them. Midway went bankrupt in 2009, so that ended the Blitz series especially with Netherrealm taking over Mortal Kombat.

If NFL were to open up the license, it would drop the cost since it wouldn't be exclusive. But, NFL would still want to make more combined than what EA Sports is paying now. So, it'll likely be more than what other non-EA/2k publisher is willing to pay. So, we're likely stuck with just EA and 2k for the NFL and NBA games

We might be talking past one another on this. So, to be clear, 2K Sports CANNOT make a simulation NFL football game -per the terms of their deal with the NFL.

IF 2K Sports decided to create an XFL or USFL football game, could they make it simulation and NOT arcade only? Yes. The NFL deal does not block them from making a simulation football game FOR ANOTHER FOOTBALL LEAGUE (as far as we know anyway).

Does that mean 2K Sports IS MAKING a simulation football game for the XFL or USFL? No, we have no word on ANY games being make -except for some arcade NFL games.

One other thought though, in regard to the license costs: 2K Sports could build a simulation football game, just to have one ready in case they get a full NFL license in the future, but they could also use that simulation code on an XFL or USFL game for quite probably free or very little license cost.

Either one of those spring football leagues would no doubt be excited to have the free advertising that comes with having a videogame on the market. For 2K Sports it would mean getting back SOME of the development cost of that simulation football code.

It reads to me like they're only limited from making an NFL Simulation game, but I don't think it really matters in the end. I think the odds of 2k releasing any other football titles outside of the Non-simulation NFL titles is close to 0.

If 2k wanted to do a simulation non-NFL football game, they would have. Realistically non-licensed sports games don't really sell well to the masses. 2k has waited for NFL license to open up in any fashion. 2k Sports put all their eggs mostly in the NBA2k basket. Any sports game that wasn't selling well, they dumped.

Within that tiny space of probability resides my hope of a sim-style, NFLPA-licensed football title from 2k (Visual Concepts specifically) that features current NFL players but is devoid of the NFL teams, logos, stadiums, etc. Basically, APF on current-gen systems.

I think it's because the rest of the big publishers are outside of the US and aren't as interested in US sports. Though Konami and a couple of others had games back in the day so re-entering would be difficult since like you said they'd have to start from scratch.

I'm surprised that Activision isn't interested in licensed sports games. Yes they have COD but yearly sports titles would great for them. Unfortunately they seem to like having all their eggs in one basket with COD.

It likely still goes exclusive. The NFL has always been about exclusive deals and one would have to be naive to think the $20 release was the only reason the NFL made the license exclusive. Given that we know the NFL even negotiated with 2k about acquiring the exclusive license before EA got it in the end, it's clear that the NFL was happy enough with 2k to still want to do business with them. If the $20 price really made them so mad they spontaneously decided to go exclusive only moving forward, I doubt 2k even sniffs a chance to acquire the license.

Also if the NFL was mad with 2K then, why would they deal with them now? The NFL sees the #'s NBA 2K is doing, doubling any # Madden has been doing the last few yrs and they want a piece of the growth in sales 2k does to get Madden into more hand for mtx's..

Nothing as of yet. It depends on how far the game was. With it being delayed to 2022 NFL release window, there's a chance we don't see anything post-Superbowl next year. It would be nice to get a title or some glimpse of information this E3. Take-Two has something on Monday 6/14, but I honestly doubt we hear anything
