Re: How would you rate 2k8? Review wise.
7.5
Game on the field is amazing. The most fun I've had in a football in a long time. Presentation is incredible as well as the atmosphere. Everything feels fresh and alive, the game BREATHES football. Sound also is excellent(Love the commentary). The game is truly a next gen football game on the field IMO.
With that said I'm not into playing people online and the game doesn't offer enough for me off line. Season mode seems thrown together. Customization for the team is great but you cant edit generics or legends. Create a player is also missing a few things.
Also I'd rather the league have more history. As much thought as they put into the stadiums I would've liked them to put into the actual league and generics. Also I think the build a team should have been saved for the season mode instead of right when you turn on the game. I would've like to have teams I can select and just go with. Also I would've like them to balance those teams and give them some personality as well as have different coaching styles and playbooks. Just give the game as much personality as the stadiums. I would've also like to have been able to edit every team in the league and throw some players around to different squads.
With everything said this is definitely the next gen game I've been waiting for ON THE FIELD. A few quirks in the AI here and there, but not enough to ruin my experience.

The bottom line for me is that this game is fun to play and the atmosphere and presentation are engrossing. The gameplay is great and is a nice change of pace from NCAA/Madden… but to me, it’s really “the little things” that count the most. From the variety of animations during (and even in between) plays to the themed stadiums, to variety of camera angles in between plays, to the halftime and end-of-game highlights, this game just feels fresh and immersive.

The things that I don’t really like are the way USER teams are picked. I would much rather have a Draft for season mode. In all honesty, I’d rather have a full fledged franchise mode for some re-playability since I’m not really an online player. I also wish there was a way to edit the other CPU teams players, uniforms, team names, etc.Comment

Re: How would you rate 2k8? Review wise.
My original score was 9.4 on a poll started last week at this site. I know that the game is not perfect but how do I go under 9 to rate the most enjoyable football game I've ever played? I don't have that many problems with the DB AI, because the rating system still puts you in danger of a pick or incompletion if you're throwing in the direction of a Silver or Gold defender. I'd like the unis and playable graphics to look a little better. The running and passing game is fantastic and I like the fact that playcalling is such a big part of the play result. I think the tier system is the best separation of who can do what on the field. I'm staying at 9.4.Comment

Re: How would you rate 2k8? Review wise.
I haven't played the game yet unfortunately (red rings bs) but I have a question:
How much do you think the reviews here by us gamers and on gaming sites would be different if the game was at a different price point?? Would they be more favorable if- say- the game was priced at 40$, or even 20$ again??
I'm not saying it was feasable for 2K to offer this, but I was just curious as to what effect it would have on the opinions and reviews?
ThanksPeace

Oh I have no doubt if the price point was $40 APF 2K8 would be getting slightly higher scores. It is a bit of a steep price for a game that is not as feature deep as the competition.
They should have taken a page from their own marketing for 2K5, which was priced on the XBox for $19.95 and sold very well.

Re: How would you rate 2k8? Review wise.
Personally I'm glad they didn't price it less. The perception that the game should be priced less than Madden or NCAA (or Blitz, or Madden current gen, etc.) is tiring. Especially when I look at both games and think there's far more in APF that people would want Madden/NCAA to have than vice versa. Not to mention that these things never factor into a score until Tiburon decides to add them to Madden. Guaranteed every Madden review will talk up gang tackling and double team blocking this year, despite the fact that they're not new concepts. And it doesn't even look like Madden's doing them particularly well in light of APF. It's because it's what EA/Tiburon chose to focus on. Same w/online leagues; there won't be much consideration given to them until Tiburon decides to go that route. I just don't see how Madden can skate with 8+ review scores and low expectations when they haven't done much really right other than the stadiums.
People like to say that "it's all about the gameplay." Nonsense. Imagine a game that really played true-to-life, but included only 2 teams. People would want more. And that's what's going on here. You can play an essentially meaningless season, and you can play online. That's it.
Player development, contracts/free agency, scouting/drafting, team and facilities improvement, league history, career statistics/records -- all absent. And that means a lot to a lot of people, including me.
I think the game is well worth $60, but while it's a great effort, it falls a little short overall.Quit making your stupid YouTube videos and start playing the game.Comment

Agree somewhat, but you can't fault someone for giving a lower rating given the price. The game, as great as it is, is thin.

No one's belittling the lack of franchise. But to act as if there's zero replay value in APF because of it's absence it what I'm saying. Imo it seems some are saying no franchise means no replay value. While I'll concede the season mode likely offers limited replay value for those not online, that doesn't mean the online component should be completely ignored. I don't see Bungie or Epic developing new single player levels of Halo or Gears for people to download - the added value for these games comes from online play. Yes, those are games of different genres. But those are also games that w/o their online components the games would likely offer 10-20hrs of gameplay value. Franchise mode is important to in a sports game - I just don't think it's the most important aspect of a sports game.HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

Re: How would you rate 2k8? Review wise.
I would rate the game a 9.2, the gameplay is the deepest of any football game as far a strategy. Players are actually seperated pretty good as far as having different abilities. You actually have to learn to use different type of running backs differently. Different types of WR are different and have completely different skill sets. QB's range from being accurate, having strong arms, scramblers, medicore, CLUTCH, quick release etc. Defensive players, same way. Ball hawks, cover guys, leaders, tacklers, pass rushers, etc.
The amount of gameplay depth from players ablilities to playcalling is the best I have seen. You even have 3 running speeds. To me this gameplay with football LEGENDS is ulitimate. But to each his own.
I only wish it had more legends and a few more skill sets. Oh, and the real time highlights. What world do you live in?Comment

Re: How would you rate 2k8? Review wise.
I'd give it a 6 or a 7.
I'm enjoying the game online, for the most part, but there's some glaring issues that I just can't ignore. The DB AI being one, lack of gameplay modes, lack of customization, the graphics, herky-jerky player movement, catch out of bounds bug, paying $40 more for a game I feel plays very similar to NFL2K5, etc. It all needs to be considered.
I honestly hope this just isn't a one year project. It's nice having another option to EA's games.Last edited by Sully; 07-24-2007, 06:47 AM.Comment

Re: How would you rate 2k8? Review wise.
I'm not sure how, on a scale of 1-10, you can honestly say this game is in the 9 range. Even 8 is pushing it.
I still feel many are in the honeymoon stage of this game, and only those who truly respect the game for what it is will play this title into the late winter.
It's a fun game to play, and for me, I have no issues with online lag, so that's a plus, but the game has issues. People are holding on to the "gameplay is all that matters" philosophy because that's all we have. But, the reality is, the gameplay is not perfect. Probably something that I don't see talked about much here is the issue with players falling down and then going into a tackling animation because a runner is going by. The same thing runs in reverse with players "falling up." If you are knocked on your butt from a block, there's no way you can quickly snap up and tackle or block again.
I'd be very strict in my final 1-10 grade. When you look at all the history, and how 2K was basicly externally removed by the exclusive license, this was their opportunity to hit a homerun. We keep hearing, "well it's only their first year." True, but when they have admitted that the game's future installments are going to be guaged by this year's success, I don't see many beyond the faithful praising this game for what it is, and that's just not going to cut it for pushing for a 2K9.
I'd give the game a 6.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment
