They can name it "Pigskin Battle 2K5" it doesn't matter to me. As long as Visual Concepts is still making it they can name it what they want.

ESPN NFL's problem is lack of advertisement and support by the ESPN itself. If They want ESPN videogames to sell better they need to plug the hell out of their titles. I would have commercials with actual game footage with real players talking smack. I would hold a super bowl week contest and have it air on ESPN 1, 2, 3 and A, B, C. I read one of their ESPN magazines and it only had one ad for ESPN NHL hockey in it. What's up with that? There should've been ads for all there current and future games all through that magazine.

How do ESPN and VC expect people to buy their titles if they aren't behind them and doing everything in their power to try and make it a success?

Everything you say is correct...but consider this. With VC selling about 1 tenth of what EA sells, can they really AFFORD an effective marketing campaign. All of your ideas are great, but WHERE is the money going to come from. They say that word of mouth is the BEST advertising but what we SEE and HEAR the most is what we will REMEMBER...This is why I think the name change was NOT a good idea because it forces people to try to remember something NEW. In all markets you have some BRANDS that people trust. MERCEDES has a reputation of putting out quality cars. That rep comes from YEARS of putting out quality cars. So people associate the name MERCEDES with QUALITY. This is only natural. VC was starting to establish that rep with the 2k series...Now they have to start from square one all over again. (Just My Opinion)

You also have to have a brand that people recognize....INSTANTLY. I think ESPN is alot more recognizable and established than "Nfl2k". As for gamers associating ESPN with old konami games being a reason for so-called lackluster sales...I doubt theres even a remotely significant amount of gamers who even cared about the old konami games.

I think the fact that nfl2k3 was so buggy/glitchy (NOT QUALITY) and was outsold 10-1 was all the more reason to go in a new direction with a highly more recognizable, more established, more MARKETABLE Brand in ESPN. You've seen many consider ESPNFL to be a totally different game from nfl2k3...so this is basically a new beginning.

As far as sales are concerned...I do believe ESPNFL has outsold Nfl2k3 already...by a considerable margin so if ANYthing, the Name change has actually benefited the series and made it alot more visible.

Its more to do with Marketing/Advertising. They may not have a monster budget but They can definitely be more affective with their ads...especially the TV ads.

But as far as the topic is concerned I think they should continue to work on the ESPNFL series. The game should be called ESPN NFL Football next year and the years after that.

Good response BBMo. Sega will be starting all over again because of the name change. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed that the name change will circulate faster in the NFL gaming community, resulting in more sales and interest for NFL2k5.

I agree people instantly recognize ESPN, but in the vast world of video gaming ESPN didn't mean SQUAT. So for people who spend money on games the title means little because ESPS's reputation for putting out quality games was not there. Quality television, Quality sports broadcasts...YES/Quality games NO!!

We disagree again. NFL2k3 was a great title. It had its problems like anything else, but it was a vast improvement over NFL2k2. Keep in mind that this was only the second NFL2k produced for the Xbox, since the Xbox made its debut. NFL2k3 was also the fourth title at that point, making NFL2k a household name at that point in time. At that time, the only two real kings of the video game football world was itself and Madden. Like another poster stated, Sega is now having to build the ESPN identity from scratch. Bye-bye four years of product recognition.

A new beginning that was not necessary. NFL2k improved itself under its original name year after year. (As long as it stays on the same console. Meaning, as long as they are not having to program for a new console every two or three years.) Again, NFL2k2 excepted because of the minimal development time available.

I would love to see the numbers. I still say that if it would have been titled 'NFL2k4–Presented by ESPN', this would have achieved two goals at once: One, gain the attention of new gamers that have heard good things about Sega's NFL2k series and have decided to give it a shot, and two, gain the trust of gamers that hated ESPN Sunday Night Football, because of the Sega NFL2k name.

We agree here. Advertising is important and their advertising last year frankly stunk. I don't care how thin Tracy Morgan gets, the man is a terrible, insignificant actor. The whole premise of the ad sucked too.

Do you remember the premiere of the Dreamcast? Do you also remember the first ad for NFL2k? It showed the Dreamcast's graphic rendition of Jim McMahon complaining to other Sega characters about how in his day, we did not have this or that. The screen would cut to scenes of old football games on the Genesis. He gets a little too rowdy and gets escorted out of the tavern as Randy Moss is saying, 'I think 'ol Jimbo got a hold of a bad taco.' This is some of the very clever advertising that NFL2k5 needs.

Yes, of course Sega should continue to work on the game, but it would help them if they went back to their true identity: NFL2k. Besides, ESPN NFL Football is too much to say.
