Re: THE TRUTH--sales figures from sega

making money and sales numbers aren't cut and dry. as a business owner you can make a lot of money if you manage it right.

for instance, EA makes a lot of money, but just to cover advertising costs EA has to sell a lot. EA makes a lot of money but it they spend $500 at the senior bowl, they have to sell 10 copies, for example just to cover that.

sega, as we all know, hasn't advertised. this will have to change only if they don't make money. you can look at the la clippers vs. la lakers approach. the clippers are one of the worst sports franchises as far as success on the court, but one of the more profitable sports teams in sports.

does the management care they aren't winning championships? no. they are making money. it is all in the bottomline.

if they were unhappy with the sales of ESPN NFL and NBA they would have dropped in cost a while back. it waited for the season to end to drop NFL only $10. College Hoops was a genius move to drop it to $29. it is now on back-order everywhere and that creates interest. people will wonder about why the hype and may desire to purchase it?

It's got to be troubling that this years' ESPN branded Sega Sports games sold fewer copies across all platforms than last years' iterations. The problems in the Sports division at Sega caused a big shake up in management.Sega's arcade business(in Japan) keeps the company solvent at this point.

Its not troubling that ESPN has sold fewer copies this year considering that by January of last year NFL 2k3 was available for just $10. If I remember correctly in January and February of last year NFL 2k3 was in the top ten seller lists for the PS2 and XBox. The only thing that should be considered troubling is that despite critial acclaim that ESPN Football failed to gain any market share.

Radja did point out the one thing that Sega/VC has on its side... Low overhead. Unlike EA they don't dish out vast amounts of cash to pay most of the league for commercials, professional recording artists for in game music, and amost every media outlet in the US for advertising time.

Visual Concepts seems to be on the right track. They're not attempting to build a title with the same features of Madden. They're taking the game out of the owner's box and back onto the field. The introduction of FPF is a big step in that direction. Unfrotunately it didn't appeal to many people. Hopefully their future efforts will enhance areas of the game more people can appriciate.

What I find the most troubling about these sales figures for ESPN NFL Football are the XBOX sales figures being just 100,000 plus copies up to this time period. This would mean that ESPN hasn't moved that many units from September03 to October03. The sales for September alone were over 116,000
thousands units during the first month on Xbox. That is how it beat Madden out on the Xbox for the month. Some of these figures are not exact & it really doesn't matter if an anomynous poster puts up false numbers because we all know that 2K5 will be released this year. SO THE #'S DON'T MEAN ANYTHING TO GAMERS BECAUSE WE'LL BE ABLE TO PLAY OUR GAME REGARDLESS!!

I agree with your post. I for one can tell u in my store we sold more ESPN Football than 2k3. And we got very positive feedback on how it [espn] played.
