In the last thread, I made the assumption the back and forth was about the game existing or not. I guess the real issue was if it was NFL. Ok.
While I would love to have an NFL game, as a football gamer, here are the positives to me of why this is not a huge issue yet :
1. Less casual players. I play large titles like COD and Destiny, and have logged my time in Madden in the past. One thing I noticed was more players = more cheese. Cheese in a football game is insanely painful because you are committed to a 35-45 minute game with said player. That being said, we did have the giant WRs in APF, and things like that, but the % of running across that was not too high in my experience.
2. We need a new football platform. This game could be a platform for a future NFL title. It appears that it could be focused on maximizing the actual gameplay. Now that is just speculation on what I have read so far, but football is such a complex game to recreate that to have Devs simply focused on making a game that plays well and is addictively rewarding would be a major step forward for next gen gaming. Let us remember that Pro Evo soccer had that incredible addictive gameplay for the PS2 and at the time it was using fake teams and players. It was still a blast to play.
3. New engine. Im more excited to see what they did on the this engine and possibly play a game that feels amazing in the hands again. It's crazy how NFL2k had that magic for many of us and then 2k5 did the same.
4. Potentially diverse Offensive and defensive concepts. I'd love more to a football game than loading up the Seahawks or Patriots and playing some other guy with his super team. Not sure how they are doing this, but I always thought a team built on concepts would just be amazing. What I mean by this is the teams are generic, but maybe one is an old school hard nosed defensive team with a 49ers offense. Or another is a wide open passing team like the Broncos. One is real good at the Chip Kelly HUNH. The point is that each team would have a truly unique playbook crafted for them as opposed to every team running mainly the same formations and plays with a few formations that they use. This would take a franchise mode to another level as you could draft and and pursue players who fit in the scheme of your team. It would almost be like an RPG. In Diablo, I will many times pass on the better overall rated weapon or armor because it does not boost the traits I need for the particular build I am going for - the same thing could apply to franchise mode and finding new players in the draft could be similar to a nice loot drop. Great players could be like great armor, so maybe you get lucky in a draft and get a guy that everyone knows is a total stud in a HUNH offense and you get some RNG on your side. I didn't know what a Gjallahorn was last September but everyone does now, and properly crafted generic players could have a similar impact.
Anyway, a lot of cart before the horse stuff but I wanted to illustrate why I personally don't mind the lack of NFL teams if the game is using concepts like what I mentioned above. The Golf Club is a great golf game and its just some regular dude hitting the ball. Doesn't matter to me because the gameplay is excellent and the overall experience just feels real.
Here is hoping this game is going in that direction.
