Re: report: Giants should have had another play

I think it's about time to start to be able to challange penalties. It seems like a way to stop at some of the bad calls being made. But who knows, an average NFL game might last 5 hours if this happens...

Actually, a better way is to make mandatory, rigorous referee training each offseason. Strap them to a chair, peel their eye lids back, and force them to watch hours and hours of game footage, and hands-on training. Damn refs

NFL Statement On Last Play Of Sunday's Game
Pass interference call would've given Bryant another shot.
NFL Communications Department

January 6, 2003

East Rutherford, N.J. - The New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers were informed today that a defensive pass interference penalty should have been called on the final play of Sunday’s game.

A videotape review by NFL Director of Officiating Mike Pereira of the final play - the Giants’ 41-yard field goal attempt with six seconds remaining - determined the following:

Tam Hopkins, number 65, of the Giants lined up as the left guard and was illegally downfield on the pass attempt. The three flags thrown on this play were for this penalty.
Guard Rich Seubert, number 69, was an eligible receiver on Giants field goal attempts. This was reported to the officiating crew prior to the game as is routinely done prior to every game.
49ers defensive end Chike Okeafor interfered with Seubert downfield when he was attempting to catch Giants holder Matt Allen’s pass. This defensive pass interference penalty against the 49ers was not called.
If defensive pass interference had been called, there would have been offsetting penalties (ineligible receiver against the Giants and pass interference against the 49ers) with the down replayed at the original line of scrimmage, the San Francisco 23-yard line. Although time had expired, a game cannot end with offsetting penalties. Thus, the game would have been extended by one untimed down.
One additional note on the play: Giants holder Matt Allen did not have the option of spiking the ball to stop the clock, which only can be done by taking a hand-to-hand snap directly from the center. If Allen had spiked the ball, it would have been a penalty for intentionally grounding the ball and the game would have ended due to a 10-second runoff of the clock.

Are you people reading well?
A game cant end on offsettings penalties!
The Giants should have had another chance to ckick the ball.

Still, Giants have no one to blame to themselves.

Now I must say, I agee with BK's statement of big games been determined by referees. I mean the statement says:
In reply to:

This was reported to the officiating crew prior to the game as is routinely done prior to every game.

Un****ingbelievable....

BTW people speaking non senses in this thread would react the same way if their team was robbed at a shot at winning at the end, so what gives???

MOst of you guys are saying the giants lost becuase of that one play. Well they didn;t. It was one small reason, but nowhere the only reason why the lost. THe had the game in control and they let up. Every one of those players are to blame for the loss. I wanted the giants to win too, but that one call wasn;t the reason why thelost

Re: report: Giants should have had another play

How can it change the outcome tho. It clearly says there was no call of Pass Interference? So if they didnt call it, what is there to offset and replay the down? Also, if the guy is ineligble receiver and isnt suppose to be able to catch the ball, how can he be interfered upon if he isnt suppose to be there to begin with???

Re: report: Giants should have had another play

But it should have been called. The guy that was knocked down near the ball wasn't in the ineligable reciever, so pass interference should have been called there.

Re: report: Giants should have had another play

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the guy who got knocked down was #65 or 68 or something. I know I looked at it as it happened and thought Ineligible Receiver. If he's wearing that number, then he would be one of the many IR's downfield for the Giants on that play.

Regardless, what a funny topic. 25 unanswered points and it's the ref's fault .

Re: report: Giants should have had another play

Well Plummer intercepted a pass that was not reviewed. So 49ers would have won anyways.

And the team can't even hold on to a 25 point lead!! So now they are complaining for a missed call.

THEY HAD 25 POINTS going into the 4th quarter!!!!!

Crybabies!!!

If they had the heart, then they would have won the game, but the other team had more heart!!

49ers Deserved to win.

Re: report: Giants should have had another play

I soley blame the refs for this.

25 unanswered points, sure. Thats the Giants fault.
But it's also the 49ers fault for trailing by 23 (or whatever it was).

The refs did a horrible job, and the Giants should have had another chance at a 40 yard FG for the win.
The fact that poor officiating (which has been a really big trend these last few years) cost a team a very good chance to win a playoff game (again) is a disgrace.

Bk-you got the seahawks, jets call backwords. Testeverde qb sneaked and was stopped a yard to a half a yard short of the endzone. They called it a touchdown, which if called right would have put the seahawks into the playoffs. That was a worse call then this one.

Because in playoff games championship caliber teams slam the door on teams when they have a 3 or 4 score lead in the 2nd half of games. The Giants didn't do that, and proved they were not a championship caliber team.

I agree! the 9ers had more heart, Giants didn't! they were cocky trash talking ice throwing punks, and they had a 25 point lead going in to the 4th quarter.

What a bunch of CRYBABIES!!

They don't deserve to move on.

Plummer also had that INT, and refs did not review it..so 49ers would still have won the game.

No doubt that was a terrible call, but this was a blown rule. IMO, a blown rule is worse

Thats a joke.

If anything no one deserved to win.
The 49ers got their asses handed to them for 3 Qtrs, came back like madmen, got the lead only to let the Giants walk down the field for the game winning FG. Only a bad snap and poor officiating stopped the Giants from winning most likely.

If there's a FG try and it goes through who would have said the 49ers deserved to win? No one. They didn't show up to play until there was 20 minutes left in the game.

And isn't Fossil an *** now for pulling out some of the starters early? I bet he doesn't do that one again.
