Browns would give LeBron a shot, if he's serious

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - If LeBron James truly believes he can help the Cleveland Browns, coach Eric Mangini has an orange helmet waiting for him.

"I think he should come on down," Mangini said.

The NBA superstar, who was an All-State wide receiver in high school, said Tuesday night that if he put the time and commitment into it, he could be a good football player. Mangini agreed, calling James "a freak athletically" and said the 6-foot-8, 260-pounder could be dangerous at tight end, wide receiver or even outside linebacker.

Quarterback Brady Quinn also heard about James' football fetish. He would love to have a target to throw to like James in the red zone.

"That'd be great," Quinn said. "Tell him to suit up and let us know, we'll get him working. Obviously he's an incredibly talented athlete. If he wants to try to play a little bit now, we'd be more than willing to pick him up."

Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers isn't convinced James, as great as he is, could step into the NFL and be able to handle the pounding.

"I heard that comment," Rogers said. "I have mixed emotions about that. A great athlete? Yes. A football player? No."

Rogers then looked into TV cameras.

"Yeah LeBron, I said it," he said. "It's a punishing game. I just don't think you can step off the basketball court after not going through this year in and year out and just play football. From that standpoint, I just don't think it's possible. You have to weather and condition your body to take this punishment."

So what if James had a year to train? Could he do it then?

"Yeah, he might make a heckuva tight end," Rogers said. "I'd like to see him out there running down the seam."

LeBron should try out. He'd be the first basketball/NFL player in the history of sports.

While it would be interesting to see, there'es no point in him lowering his market value by doing it. In the venue of the NBA he's a superstar with superstar talent (and marketability) and is on track to being remembered as one of the all time greats. In the NFL he'd be a freak......but starting at square 1 with no gauruntee of performing any better than your average #2 TE (or whatever position he'd play). Look at Jordan, best of all time on a basketball court......poor transition to baseball.

Of course, that isn't to say that LeBron couldn't morph into a freakish Antonio Gates-type player. He very well could.

I would love to see this. That'd be crazy, but I don't think he's serious.

It would be hilarious, but could you imagine the Cavs front office? Im not sure what kind of contract would have to be drawn up. Right now they have clauses to keep these guys from skiing, etc.

No way he does this, risks to much.

Why? Would he really help the Browns? He is a superstar basketball but just because he was an all-state player in high school means nothing. It will never happen, but if he did he would be an average player and be a 3rd string TE at best.

I don't think he's fast enough to play in the NFL. What would his 40 time be? I'd have to say 4.9-5.1 range.

Bad idea and all but Lebron's pretty fast. You'd be surprised. He's insanely fast for his size. I don't know how it'd translate but I think he'd be at least as fast as the fastest TE.

Really? I guess he's just so tall it looks like he's moving in slow motion on the court.

Yeaaaaa....stick to what you do best, Lebron. Besides, you won't have the Refs looking out for you everytime like you in Bball.

LeBron is one of the fastest players from end to end in the NBA, if not the fastest when nobody is in front of him.

He's an INSANE athlete in that regard, especially when you consider that he's as agile as some point guards with a 6'9, 260 lbs frame.

Yeah, but remember he's Magic's height. He see's eye to eye with most power forwards, but he's about as fast as a guard (the ones with the most comparable NFL speed). That's the main reason he's such a ridiculous athlete. He also jumps like a guard with a forward's height. He could've been an NFL star, no doubt. But not now.

Put 30-40 pounds on him and he's an offensive lineman.

He get's hit with one shot from Ray Lewis and it's over for King James.

Honestly, if someone had the time to groom him and train him, I think he could be a TERROR as a defensive end. He's so big and he's fast and agile and has those long limbs. If he bulked up a little bit (he's already got a decent amount of muscle on him) and went in to a 4-3 scheme, he would be tough to deal with. Most OT's have long arms so they can get to the pass rusher's body first, but no one would be able to get to LeBron's body first because he's so tall. And he'd probably swat 2 or 3 passes per game.
