It's gotta be Emmitt , Barry , or Walter.

Never saw Walter, Emmitt was damn good, and Barry had the most unique running style the NFL has ever seen.

I'd still take Emmitt Smith over the other 2

I had to use my bias and go with Sanders in the poll. Not too mention I never saw Brown play.

I grew up idolizing Walter Payton but I voted Barry Sanders.

James Nathaniel Brown was the baddest man to ever put on a pair of shoulder pads.


Also, looking on that list, you left off Gale Sayers. He was the pre-cursor to the multi-purpose backs like Faulk; just a gorgeous, fluid runner who looked like he was ice skating on the field.

I voted for Jim Brown.

9 NFL seasons = 9 Pro Bowls, 8 times selected 1st team All-Pro ( in '62 Brown had to settle for 2nd team All-Pro ); 3 time league MVP; averaged 5+ yards/carry and 100+ yds/gm for his career; retired while still in his prime as the NFL's all-time leading rusher, a record he held for 21 years...all this while never missing a single start.

Brown is not merely the greatest rb, he's the greatest player in NFL history.

There's also no way to prove that Barry would've been better on Dallas or Emmit would've sucked on Detroit or another team.

These arguments don't work! Period. It's just like always speculation. We can only deal with what really happened.

His statistics speak volums to his effectiveness over a long period of time, but that alone does not make him the greatest RB of all time.

As I said earlier for my money best pure runner I ever saw was Eric Dickerson, hands down.

Greatest RB all things being equal, not sure my opinion on this changes frequently. I'd probably have to go Payton right now.

whether he is the greatest or not is up for debate, but Smith accomplished more than any running back in history, just like Jerry Rice accomplished more than any WR in history

as far as choosing one out of these great legendary backs, it just depends on what kind of offense you want to run and what kind of back you are looking for. Dickerson might have been the most explosive back ever but if i want a grinder that will move the chains and consistency from an all around back that can do it all I would go Smith or Payton. If I want highlight reel runs, I would go Sanders. If I need to win a playoff game in Candlestick Park or Lambeau, and again I need a back that will grind out the yards and move the chains, I would ride with Emmitt Smith. You cant go wrong with any of those players though obviously
