I got Barry Sanders at first, followed by Walter Payton, than Faulk/OJ at third. Like someone stated earlier, Mike Vick #1 at a non-back position.

Re: Best runningback of all time
I like Walter Payton. He was just as consistent and durable as Emmit, but did it on really bad teams for a lot of his career. On top of that, he was just such a well rounded back. He really had no weakness in his game. He could get the tough yards. He was an awesome pass catcher.
Also, why does Thurman Thomas never get named in these? In his prime, he was one of the best offensive players ever.
Also again, after LT retires, he'll be remembered fondly. Right now, LT "pouting" on the sidelines or stammering helplessly for 2 YPC is too fresh in our minds.Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
Since fullbacks and half backs are both running backs, Jim Brown followed by Walter Payton and then Barry Sanders. When rookie Randall Cobb was told by this U.S. Marine that he was a big fan of the wide receiver, Cobb said, “I think I’m a bigger fan of yours.”Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
Barry Sanders is my favorite from the list, and one of the few I remember watching play.
A few others I always loved were:
The Bus
Curtis Martin
Ricky Watters -- who is actually 20th on the all-time rushing yards list.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.Comment

I still say if Barry Sanders had played for those Emmitt Smith Cowboys teams he'd have gone for 20,000 yards.Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
I think Jim Brown is head and shoulders above anyone else. Next would be Barry Sanders and then OJ Simpson as far as pure running ability.
Walter Payton may have been a better all around player than all of them though."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
im not saying this because i am a bears fan but i think that the greatest running back of all time was gale sayers due to the fact that he was just amazing ... i think it was 22 TDs in a season when there was only 12 games in a season ... if not him then i would have to go with walter payton because he was a allround top notch running back .... cmon .... he played 16 or something like that seasons and the first 5 years or so the bears had a horrible team ...
but overall the greatest running back of all time has to go to WALTER PAYTONComment

Re: Best runningback of all time
LT in his prime best combination of speed, power and receiving abilities i seen in a running back broke 1 year Shaun Alexander's record with 28 tds in a season. I was only six yrs old when Barry Sanders retired just showing how old i am.Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
Emmitt was a chain mover and an all around back. He was the perfect fit for that schemeComment

Although this whole players around them thing certain people use to discredit Emmitt and give more credit to Sanders makes no sense to me.Comment
