One other name to add to the list. Marcus Allen. Smoothest RB I have ever seen not named Eric Dickerson. Great blocker, great receiever and a great goalline runner.

Marcus was a great great player.

I dont think any running back has ever "fit" with a team better than Emmitt and those 90s Cowboys. "If it isnt broke dont fix it" is what I say

Although this whole players around them thing certain people use to discredit Emmitt and give more credit to Sanders makes no sense to me.
I have never understood that either. NFL is the ultimate team sport. I dont know why people would hold it against certain players because they executed their role on a good team...and we obviously dont know what would happen if players switched systems. Hypotheticals are fun though.

It's funny though. People act like Barry played on a team full of stiffs and he was the only legit NFL player on the team.

One guy said no one on the list had less talent around them? Umm. Anyone remember who played with Dickerson in LA? Or Campbell in Houston? Dieter Brock ring a bell? Marshall Faulk put up one of the greatest seasons ever on a 3 win team. LaDainian Tomlinson the early years? That team was horrid.

        Stupid agendas.

Most yards + Most TDs + 3 Super Bowl Rings = G.O.A.T., #22 Emmitt Smith.

I don't know bro...Walter had horrendous O-lines before the 84 season. He also had absolutely no passing game to speak of........screw 8 men on the box, Walter had to deal with all 11:wink::wink:

In my life time it would be Earl Campbell. With Eric Dickerson real close. Earl was just so fun to watch. I still remember the song. "The Houston Oliers the Houston Oilers the Houston Oilers #1." He was beast!

WTF do Super Bowls have to do with being the best running back of all time? Are we going strictly on stats? Is this the Fantasy Football GOAT thread?

yea there are plenty of players that played on teams with lesser talent than Sanders, but a vast majority of those statements seem to be reserved solely for when Barry's name is brought up. That perception has been parroted so many times and it's taken on a life of it's own.

I dont understand how comparing supporting casts is the main criteria in gauging running backs anyway. I can see giving a player extra consideration because he was stuck on a bad team but I dont see giving him a bump over someone else just because the other player played well on a good team

and like you said, Barry played with some decent NFL players (like Herman Moore, Lomas Brown, etc)...and he had a system that fit him well (with the spread out 3 wide run and shoot)...and a stadium that also fit him extremely well. The hypotheticals can go both ways. If Sanders "would have" been drafted by the Packers and had to play in Green Bay I dont know if he would have been nearly as prolific as he was with the Lions. I dont blame Sanders' playoff performance in Lambeau completely on his supporting cast but that seems to be a cop out by many people.

Well when one holds the record for the two most important things RBs do, gain yards and score TDs then I think it is more than fair to say he is the G.O.A.T..

                        Sure in fantasy football.

I can see the argument for Emmitt, but not for the reason you listed. YOu wouldn't happen to be a Cowboy fan as well would you?

Re: Best runningback of all time

By sheer ability and the way he made it look effortless, it's Dickerson in my book. Being almost 6'4 230lbs when the average RB was much shorter and compact, I remember Ronnie Lott saying that a lot of people learned the hard way that just because Dickerson was long and lean, that didn't mean he couldn't run people over. He played in the NFC West when the Niners were kicking all kinds of azz and he gave them fits on a regular. The man with the neckroll and Rec Specs earned their respect at a time when they had a top shelf defense and were winning Super Bowls.

His biggest setback was his mouth. When he left LA and went to Indianapolis, it was the beginning of the end for him. He got his money, but left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths with his attitude, being labeled with the "bad teammate" tag and the contract disputes, and I feel that has been the main reason he isn't mentioned when the "Greatest RB" discussion comes up. Had he not left LA, I feel he could have ran for close to 20,000 yards.

After his first 6 years he had over 11,000 yards. His last 4-5 years were wasted playing behind bad offensive lines and he was hurt a lot. Eric Dickerson will always be a story of what could have been.

Obviously, I'm going to be a homer and say Emmitt Smith; the man is the all time leader in yards and is nearly atop most of the key RB stats. He didn't have the most talent or most athleticism, but I'd take him on my roster any day of the week.

Where I think he is the best was his versatility in that he could do it all: run inside with power, run outside with finesse, had a nose for the endzone, receiving threat and was an excellent pass protector. He simply never left the field because of this. His durability is what sets him apart in the end because it takes a man strong of will to be able to endure that kind of punishment for so long. I recall games where the guy was playing with a seperated shoulder, pulled hamstrings, etc, but somehow he was out there still churning away on the field. I mean, the man nearly gained 1000 yards his last season (age 35) playing for the Cardinals; that pretty proof positive that he wasn't merely a guy who benefited from a good OL.
