Tragedy? Negative. Not even in a football perspective. It's an injury. One that he will probably bounce back from and have three or four more productive years.

Surprised how many people seem so confident Manning will be back this season or next season at the soonest. He already had 2 surgeries and wasn't even supposed to miss a game or need this last surgery at all..

When I think of neck injuries, first people that come to mind are Sterling Sharpe and Michael Irvin. Neither were able to return to football and Irvin ended up with Cervical Spinal Stenosis, which is what kept Cooper Manning out of football too.

There is a very real possibility Manning will never throw another pass in the NFL again. Even tho I'm not a Colts fan and my man Brett Favre holds every major passing record there is, I would still hate to see Manning's career end on a sour note like this.

Eh, I really don't think so. I get it, it seems a bit much, but two neck surgeries at what, 34? You're widely considered as one of the top five quarterbacks of all-time, you won a Super Bowl, your great grandchildren will never want for anything due to all the money you made... Maybe it's time to look at your health and question whether playing in the NFL is worth it anymore.

"Cervical fusion..." Just sounds serious. Something that could affect life later on.

I remember reading an article in a Sports Illustrated article about former NFL players who were physically unable to play with their kids two or three years after their retirement... I saw that first hand when I worked with a former 11-year NFL veteran who played on the offensive line. In every sense, his body was SHOT. He could not walk up stairs without excruciating pain, he could not do anything. He was 43. I asked him to play in a work softball game, and he laughed at me, telling me that if he even attempting to swing a bat or run, he'd be out of work for a month.

It's not all that asinine. But Manning is a competitor and will be back. Hopefully it's the right call for him and his family (he has a wife and twins).

I get it if he wants to keep playing, but I'd have to think long and hard about it. Then again, I'm a pretty family oriented dude and I envision myself wrestling with my kids well into my 50's.

It's his third neck procedure in under 2 years. Is it a career threatening injury? You bet it is. No one knows how his neck and those nerves will respond once he begins rehab. The number of hits Manning has taken has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion. We aren't talking concussions. One small hit on him or him being under a pile and bent wrong could end it.

Is it tragic? Only if his career is cut short by it.

Well the number of games he's playing is definitely being cut short because he's out this week. As for his career, nerve injuries are highly variable in how they heal. No one, including most neurosurgeons, really knows how he's going to respond and anyone making claims about him being back or his career being over are mostly talking out of their rear end.

Actually I said nothing, because I never heard/read anybody implying that the season would be any less enjoyable when he went down.

Well I guess you don't enjoy watching great players play. Aside from being a Colts fan, I also enjoy seeing great players set records and make lasting legacies, part of what makes me enjoy watching even after my team is out. When they're unable to do that, it's a little disappointing. Basically, I'm also a fan of football and I was a little disappointed and said the same things when Brady went down.

Aside from being a Colts fan, I also enjoy seeing great players set records and make lasting legacies, part of what makes me enjoy watching even after my team is out. When they're unable to do that, it's a little disappointing. Basically, I'm also a fan of football and I was a little disappointed and said the same things when Brady went down.

This game is waaaay bigger than just two player. You can get wrapped into the media hype that the QB is the only reason for playing the game. I enjoy so many other aspect of the game it doesn't impact my viewing pleasure one bit.

Not a lot. You're a Colts fan so it's understandable. It is disappointing that he isn't gonna play but, to other fan bases he won't be missed all that much for a season.

It is bigger than two players, but those two players were hugely important over the last decade. The game was also much bigger than Barry Sanders, Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Dan Marino, Reggie White... but all of those guys added a lot to football each time they played for a season (and took away a lot when they didn't).

Jay Glazer just reported Manning did have a procedure prior to his neck surgery a couple of weeks ago. He flew to Europe to have stem cell treatment.

It looks like that Indianapolis radio host was correct in everything he reported....so far.

When a superstar, a face of the game like this is out, its devastating. I hate the Patriots with a passion but I thought it sucked that we didnt get to watch Brady that year.

he had to have the surgery in europe because it is illegal here to have stem cell anything. that procedure must have come out of his own pocket because the team can not pay for a illegal procedure.

plus what if all those church nuts who scream you messing with gods hand when you do things like that start a fuss over this. they allways looking for free pub, just a thought. im gonna say he is done for this yr
and the colts keep kerry collins and the colts keep losing and they go after luck next yr in the draft and pay peyton manning the 20 million anyways just to retire.

Problem with them going for luck is I think the Colts will win more games than probably both the Chiefs and Seahawks
