Alex Smith doesn't have to outplay Brees for the Niners to win. His job is to not make turnovers.

What I find interesting is Alex Smith is the most sacked QB in the NFL on only 445 pass attempts in the regular season, with the aggressive style of Gregg Williams he's going to bring it and try to force Smith into mistakes. Say what you want, but Alex Smith is going to have to make some big plays to win a playoff game against the Saints.

The teams with an offense as close to the Saints the 49ers have faced they lost to the Cowboys and barely pulled out a 1 pt win against the Eagles, not to mention they looked more vulnerable toward the end of the season.

Smith doesn't throw the ball away is why he gets sacked too much.

And there's nothing wrong with that either.

I'd rather my QB take sacks than turn the ball over to the other team.

flip side is that Smith won't take risks that maybe he should given the defense the Niners have.

Not sure I follow. He has a great D so should be taking less risks, no?

Theoretically yeah, different levels of play but that's the philosophy LSU follows.

I guess he just wants to take more risks thinking if something happens the 49ers D will step it up, which is probably not something I'd do this game given the explosiveness of the Saints and despite the low TOs the Saints have forced this season the threats are still there.

sorry, the other way around. Sometimes, I do wish he'd throw a ball he shouldn't simply because the Niner D will most likely bail him out.

The thing is you can't rely on that ALL the time and I'm not sure if this weekend is the time to start doing that.

So the team the 49ers have faced with an offense most like the Saints is..... The Cowboys?!?!? Yeah not really. I'd say the Lions.

They barely pulled out a 1 point win over the Eagles, after being down 20-3 in the 2nd half. They beat the Bengals on the road. They beat the Giants. They beat the Lions on the road. They beat Pittsburgh at home.

Say what you want about eh Niners, but they have beaten some decent teams and on the East Coast no less.

You know how many teams the Patriots have beaten this year above .500??

                      None.

                      Just sayin.

Cowboys have several weapons to spread guys out along with a good QB to get things done, and decent RBs at the time. Pretty similar to the Saints imo in relations to the weapons they have to spread a team out, the Saints will just take it a few steps farther with 4-5 WRs who are capable of making a play, an Elite TE, Sproles/Pierre out of the backfield.

The Patriots have nothing to do with this conversation

I think you are overvaluing the Cowboys offense immensely to compare them to the Saints.

I'm not i'm just saying there are similarities in certain ways more then most of the other opponents they've played.

                              Ok gotcha.

Bein a huge Niner fan, and you are obviosly a Saints fan, Im just hopin for a competitive game without any talk of officials being involved.

I dont think the Niners will win, but I think they can make it closer than most expect.

The NFL playoffs are a funny thing though, and the Saints look much more average outdoors regardless of the temperature.

                                How do you figure?

As far as WR's go they have three guys now with the emergence of Laurent Robinson that would be # 1's on most NFL teams. If Dez Bryant would fix his attitude and actually run his routes instead of using pure ability to beat out defenders he's a top five wide-out in this league. So you have three extremely talented wideout's and a great TE. On the receiving side the Cowboys are stacked, the only difference is the Saints benefit from having a better QB.
