Do you really blame them? Richard Sherman will make $510K this year ($30,000 over 17 game checks) Brandon Brower makes 465K ($27,353). Average NFL career is what 3.5 years. So the average player gets 60 pay checks for their career. Why should they sacrifice for the "team", when they will be forgotten once they are no longer valuable?

Before someone says, something about 510K being a lot of money. Don't, its supply and demand. The top 1% of people in any field pretty much can name their price. It happens in many industries where the best people get the best perks.

Merrill has offered some top advisers large bonuses, with a high-performing broker who produces $1 million in revenue in line to receive a pay package with at least $1.5 million upfront, plus deferred compensation. By dangling large signing bonuses, the firm runs the risk of overpaying for new hires if their business doesn't perform as expected.

Except in the NFL, I'd say it's probably more than 1%.

I don't blame them at all.

I just hope they don't pull out the "I'll sacrifice anything to get a Super Bowl" BS though.

After taxes, and another fees, it probably is down to say at the lowest $200,000. Which is probably what a lot of people take 3-6 years to make, and they make that in 1 year. So yeah, that is a lot of money.
I don't blame them at all for milking it so they get the most of their money though.

It's all about perspective. While that may be "a lot" of money to you and I, they are among the lowest paid individuals in their peer group. Champ Bailey makes $11 million for example, near awful DeAngleo Hall is making $9.8. It's all about perspective. My manager makes is rumored to make just south of that, so he probably wouldn't consider it that much money.

Like I said, they are a part of the 1% of people on the planet that can do what they do, no different that neurosurgeons, there are not a lot of them running around. You skill-set dictates your compensation.

This is true, and they are at the top of the 1% so I understand it from a general perspective.

BUT they are being suspended for cheating, likely helping them play at that high level, so working the system to make a couple of dollars on top of the cheating their getting punished for is all pretty f'ed up if you ask me.

That is another discussion. I just understand why they would rather go through the appeals process and collect a regular season game check over a play-off game check if they are suspended and miss a playoff game rather than missing a regular season game.

                Re: NFL Off Topic 2012

With a year left on a five-year deal that pays $8.47 million in 2013, Cutler said he'd consider taking a "hometown discount" to remain with the Bears because less money in a contract would mean more flexibility for the team in its efforts to acquire talent.

"I'm not gonna try to break the bank," Cutler said on ESPN 1000's "The Jay Cutler Show."

The discussion came as a result of Cutler's co-host Tom Waddle suggesting the quarterback take a veteran-minimum type of salary in his new deal.

"What kind of discount we talkin'?" Cutler asked.

                Waddle replied, "50 percent off."

"Ah, c'mon," Cutler said, laughing. "We can talk like 5 or 10 (percent off), but 50? This isn't a going-out-of-business sale."

After the jokes, Cutler revealed he's thought about taking less money in a new deal because as a seven-year veteran, the quarterback has already earned plenty of money.

"I want to be on a successful team, and I know that paying one or two or three players premium (salaries) hurts your chances of being able to bring in extra talent," Cutler said. "So when we get there, we'll figure it out."
Cutler said he and receiver Brandon Marshall discussed how the desire to win eventually takes precedence over salary demands. Cutler and Marshall connected 10 times for 165 yards Sunday in the club's overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Apparently Cutler wants to ensure he and Marshall remain together for years to come.

"I don't think I should even be saying stuff like this. I'm killing myself right now," Cutler joked. "I'm breaking the bank. Let's go back; rewind. (Agent) Bus (Cook) is gonna text me (saying), 'What are you doing right now?'"

According to a source close to Cutler, the sides haven't even started preliminary discussions on a new contract for the quarterback. General manager Phil Emery said in October that the team's preference is to engage in negotiations during the offseason.

Cutler would also prefer to discuss a new contract at the end of the season as opposed to now.

"You get to a point in your career I think it's not even about money," Cutler said. "You're secure. You want to win Super Bowls.

Yep, I get it too... even though that's messed up for other reasons.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen was already excused from the team through Wednesday to be with his seriously ill father, leaving offensive coordinator Greg Knapp to run the show.

Monday night his father died of cardiac arrest. Allen is still expected to return to the team Wednesday evening to coach the Raiders against the visiting Broncos.

After the Raiders loss on Sunday, coach Dennis Allen announced that he would be leaving the team until Wednesday to be with his ailing father.

Let's not forget about how awesome it was to watch him beat up Finnegan either. That is also a great reason to cheer for him.

Boom goes the secondary. Whoever it is that is running the Redskins drug education and prevention program needs to be fired. That is 4 players over the last 2 seasons who have been suspended.
