...and example of when I loved the show. The in-depth highlights, the analysis, all so much better than now. Watching those highlights also reminds me of how much better the NFL was then than now...

It sounds weird, but the music used during NFL Primetime is burned into my brain

Not weird at all. That was the best part.

He's just a bit more tolerable when talking baseball but still.

Just gotten progressively more insufferable as time has gone on.

I miss NFL Primetime for nostalgic reasons, but at the same time even if it existed today I admit I wouldn't watch it.

For better or worse, the internet has rendered the sports highlights television show obsolete. I literally get NFL highlights delivered to my XBOX minutes after they happen, so I have no reason to wait until 7:30 PM to watch the highlights of the day anymore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I remember a time when it was either watch highlights on Sportscenter or read about the box score in the paper the next day. SC and Prime-time were both must-see TV back then. Now with the internet and watching games through the Sunday Ticket/RZ Channel I rarely ever watch highlight or post game shows anymore.

I do have a soft spot in my heart for the 90's SC Anchors though. Berman, Scott, Patrick, Kohn, Eisen, Steiner, Levy, Ravich, Olbermann, etc. were what I watched getting ready for school everyday. Dat nostalgia tho!

                    Re: NFL Off Topic

I think you guys all make fine points NFL Primetime was of a certain era and zeitgeist. I was listening to a podcast a while ago done by a Toronto media guy and his guest was his closest friend in the business. At one point they talked about how we're just completely inundated with information and behind the scenes stuff that we're frankly overloaded.

There used to be a time when we can watch a game and get some info but be able to breathe rather than having access to everything from so and so's criminal record or some guy being a cancer in the locker room etc etc. The NFL is probably the closest to what we used to have as the games are only once a week for our favorite teams and you CAN shut yourself off from the news cycle during the relatively long offseason.

Back to Primetime specifically though, That show from 1990 to about '97-'98 was THE best football program around. Everything from the music, which I still hum in my head every now and again to the in depth highlights and analysis made it unique. It's a bit sad that because of the NFL highlights restrictions you can't really get a show that's that intense with the highlights and breaking down the plays. in a lot of respects the loss of that has made Tom Jackson's role less than what it used to be but every now and again when I see him on Countdown he still makes some salient points being one of the oldest guys on the set and having been involved in football for over 40 years.

in short, we're never going to have that magical moment where you can bridge the 4 PM games and the Sunday Nighter like that anymore but we still have the memories of those great times.

NFL Primetime was absolutely my favorite show in the early 90's. Things changed a little in 1995 for me because NFL Sunday Ticket came in to existence in 94 but I was only 20 so it wasn't until 95 that I could go to a bar and watch all of the Steelers games.

Prior to that, I counted on Primetime to tell me and show me the story of how the Steelers games that I had to miss went. By 1996 I had Sunday Ticket myself.

I loved Primetime right to the end though and I hated to see it go. It was the only NFL highlight show that really gave you the story of how the game went. Not just a couple highlights of a couple of the touchdowns but the whole story. I miss those days tremendously.

I know you can get highlights on the internet, but I still like the video packages that highlight shows on TV put together.

The internet is obviously better for specific plays and moments nearly instantly, but as far as full on production, I still rely on TV.

TIL that the Steelers are the only NFL team to not have 12 or more losses in a season since they went to a 16 game schedule.

I attribute it to more talk ABOUT the game than highlights OF the game.

Sportscenter has so many analysts and discussions about the game I'd near have to wait an hour for the top of the show to see highlights of the game.

That's the one thing I appreciate about Quick Pitch on MLBN...it's pure highlights of the games.

Simmons Ringer podcast talked about the history of the highlights and how ESPN revolutionized it, built an empire on t.

But now they're seeing lower ratings and one reason could be younger fans are viewing highlights on phones and iPads, from tweets of videos made by amateurs using tuner cards.

They tweet the clips a few minutes after the plays happen, before the games are over. Plus they're edited more creatively than you'd see on tv.
