Definitely not suggesting it should be longer for the sake of being longer.

The truth is (agreeing with your point about the other sports) the skills competitions are potentially the most exciting thing they can do with the pro bowl. I also have watched other skills competitions, and they can definitely add enough fan fare to spread it out similar to NBA's All Star Saturday night.

The dunk contest is pretty unique, and even though it's not the event it used to be, it's still probably the most popular All Star event of any sport. There's no need to compete with that... but they can absolutely compete with the home run derby, the 3pt shooting contest. And would dwarf the NBA skills competition pretty easily.

There are enough potential events to easily go over an hour without even adding any extra fanfare. But they could build up the events talking up stats of the participants, and interviews (which would be more received here than the drawn out press week). Throw in some time to talk about superbowl coming up, while spending more time telling the stories and showing the faces of the players.

Start it Saturday afternoon... it'd easily get more eyes than the actual game.

I'll take any event from the NBA All Star Weekend over any NFL Skills Competition. Hell, I'd even take the Home Run Derby over it as well.

Weird, does he have a background in player personnel?

They certainly did a good job of hiding it, if they've been interviewing or considering Lynch.

Maybe he has a link to Shanahan.

Not at all, he retired from playing, then directly to the booth.

OK no background in player personnel and they give him a 6-year deal as a first time GM.

So Lynch played his last 4 years in Denver for Mike Shanahan. I don't know if Kyle was on that staff. Maybe Mike vouched for him.

Local 49ers reporter said that Lynch wanted to keep his candidacy secret so while it was publicly reported that Shanahan was meeting with Paton and McDonough, there was suppose to be a secret candidate.

Some speculation that the secret candidate was former Bucs GM Mark Dominik.

It's an out of the box hire. All 49ers fans can hope is that the guy is smart and knows the game well enough that he could work with experienced player personnel guys.

Presumably that's what John Elway did when he first took over?

Elway actually had executive experience going into his GM job, running an AFL team for several years, won a championship and also executive of the year iirc and is involved in other businesses.

At least it's not a retread and it's something different, which is what we want teams to do, I'll say that much.

This is a pretty unprecedented hire. It could be a great out of the box hire or Matt Millen Mark 2. I wish him luck and I think this pretty much confirms that Shanahan will be the new head coach and have a significant say in personnel as well.

Huge deal for a guy that's never done it before? I need his interview skills.

It certainly opens up York to criticism if it doesn't work out. Pairing a first-time HC with not only a first-time GM but someone who's never worked in the front office at any capacity.

He promoted Tomsula and it was obvious from day 1 that he wasn't ready.

However, I'm more wait and see for Lynch. If he pulls a Phil Jackson and try to build a Tampa 2 defense, like Phil trying to push the triangle offense now, then you have to be suspicious.
