They're not really looking to legalize it in any form, just lessen the punitive punishments involved and push it more towards treatment.

I'd expect failing to follow through with the treatment that it mandates would lead to the punitive punishments anyways.

One example given in the article is someone may start smoking in part due to depression. You may miss the ability to help a player who is suffering from something else that were pushed towards this solution if they don't try and treat underlying reasons.

It's not really addressing recreational uses.

Would players in legal battles for being caught using in states where it's illegal then be immune from the personal conduct policy?

I think they'd have more leverage if they took the approach of getting the NFL to mirror the changes in city and state laws with their policies. This would mean some players still shouldn't take the chance of lighting up, but others would be fine if abiding by their state's laws. Then, as the rest of the country catches up (as it looks like the direction we're going), the NFL rules continue to adapt appropriately.
They should just stop testing for it altogether because it's silly that they test for it in the first place.

Owners seem conservative types who disapprove of it -- unless some of them partake themselves.

Plus it's something they use as leverage against the players and the NFLPA in CBA negotiations so it seems unlikely they'll give it away without demanding something in return.

I hear you, but trying to think from their perspective...

There are many drugs and other avenues available to treat depression, pain, etc. When it comes to supplements, herbs, drugs, creams, whatever, players look at the list, and find something that's not on it. From this angle, weed IS on the list... and the NFL can easily just say take something else.

But let's assume for sake of argument that explanation gets to the next stage of the conversation. It still doesn't account for the many states that still don't allow legal use even for medicinal purposes. I just don't see the NFL signing off on approving use of something that the player's state says is illegal... for any reason. And that doesn't even account for the federal angle that the NFL may feel more obligated to latch onto.

That's a different conversation, for sure. I think it's too late for that at this point. If this never hit the radar they could've probably quietly gone this route, but with the spotlight so bright on the NFL and it's player conduct policy, I don't think they could just stop testing for it without it rousing a vocal minority (and in today's social media age, we know what kind of damage that can do to their already fragile image).

It's illegal everywhere still though, even in places that have 'legalized' it. Only once that has changed will there be any merit to any conversation about not testing for it at all, and at that point it'd basically become alcohol, can be fired will under the influence at work, tested for during incidents, etc.

They should test Goodell for pot.

I really hope the skills competitions for the Pro Bowl is good. Kind of odd that it's at 7pm on a Thursday but nonetheless, I love these sort of things.

I just hope the dodgeball game doesn't end up causing a serious injury like the Robert Edwards injury in 1999 playing the rookie flag football game during Pro Bowl week.

I loved how he used completion percentage and fewer penalties in these games to support his statement.

Your first reply is kind of confusing. You can't (realistically) request use of an illegal substance as a treatment option. At the core, they're getting fined/suspended for using illegal substances (not just something on the NFL banned list).

As for your 2nd reply, that's pretty much what I'm saying. It's not legal so there's no leg to stand on for suggesting they stop testing for it.

Also, when in sam hill did they start giving timeouts in Dodgeball?

Most dodgeball leagues (speaking more to recreational leagues, don't know if even official rules exist) have always given each team one timeout per match.
