I think it's just how Gettleman dealt with the players, coaches, etc. DeAngelo Williams was a terrific player for Carolina (our career leader in rushing) and Carolina is one of the few teams he won't sign with because of how Gettleman treated him. Steve Smith, Mike Tolbert, DeAngelo, Norman even Jordan Gross...there was definitely a list in Gettleman's short tenure of players that didn't appreciate how they were treated. I get that it's business but I'm sure Richardson wanted somebody to be upright and fair to beloved players and not take constant PR hits.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine. -

I get that Jerry wants loyalty or whatever, but does he want it at the expense of long-term success? I guess so.
This is a disastrous move, in my mindComment

Redskins go public w/ Cousins negotiations after failing to get a deal today by the franchise cap deadline:https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/sta...40178627522560
@RapSheet
Last year, the #Redskins wanted more time to evaluate Kirk Cousins. This year, Cousins wants more time to evaluate the #Redskins.

Re: NFL Off Topic
The Redskins kinda had to do that to save even a little face. This thing has gone on way to long and if its true Cousins' agent didn't counter that it takes a large portion of the blame off them.
I wouldn't have done it, but I can see where Bruce Allen is coming from seeing how he has had a rough off-season in the eyes of the fans.Last edited by N51_rob; 07-17-2017, 04:36 PM.Moderator

Re: NFL Off Topic
I'm not sure if I would have gone public either but the way things have been going between Cousins and Redskins management they kinda had to do it. If it's true that Cousins' agent didn't provide a counter offer than the Redskisn are off the hook if he leaves town.
I'm not sure what Cousins is thinking here. He wants to evaluate the Redskins? Look, a lot of what happens with that team comes from how he performs every week. If he has a down year that will impact the kind of money he will make on his next contract. It's a bit of a gamble for him and one i'm not sure i'd make myself.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Not sure I buy the whole "They didn't come back to us with an offer" deal considering this has been going on for 2 years now.#RespectTheCultureComment

Look, the Skins had a chance to get him on the cheap but THEY decided to gamble and now the cards are all in Kirk's hand. He's making an insane amount of money whether they give him a long term deal worth him listening to, or if he plays on the franchise tag for another year. There's no reason for him to say a word if they aren't going to give him something worth passing up on what the franchise tag will pay him.
Considering all of the players that hold out and get pissed about being franchised, I think it's funny that Cousins is being painted as a bad guy for happily accepting it for the 2nd year in a row.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
Good read on this:
In other words, Cousins was already in line to make a minimum of $52.7 million over the next two seasons without sacrificing the leverage of going year-to-year on his contract. Allen and the organization wanted him to give up that leverage and leave nearly $40 million on the table for an additional $300,000. Even if you want to believe that Cousins should take a conservative approach in a league in which the attrition rate is perilously high, there's no way to make that math credibly work. This wasn't the sort of record-setting, no-brainer offer the organization is suggesting in Allen's statement. It's barely a credible one given Cousins' current leverage.Comment

He set the franchise passing record... and then broke it. There is absolutely no reason he shouldn't bet on himself.

Cousins has really spun the franchise tag stigma on its head. We hear about how teams have a lot of power over the control of their players, being able to use the franchise tag and even transition tag I believe to keep their player around for years while a contract is being negotiated, while the player has traditionally sought out the security of a long term deal to avoid this type of drama. Yes, the player is paid handsomely in the meantime, but as a true free agent we don't even know what a QB like Cousins could fetch. He's still probably leaving money on the table by being tagged, but again, that control is in the hands of the team, not Cousins.
Sounds like when Cousins was okay with a year on the tag, he decided he was in it for the long haul. He's basically turning the team's power in to his own power by being okay with being on a year to year deal. I feel like only a QB, and only one whose had a unique road to becoming a pretty good starting QB like Cousins, could've pulled this off. Their importance and rarity has opened the door to push the limits of what a good starting can make per year.
I don't see a negative to this for Cousins. He's now got two years of good play under his belt. He gets hurt this year and WSH bails? He's still going to make insane money somewhere else. He'll be like a more established Drew Brees and Culpepper when they hit the market over a decade ago. There's a couple of teams currently rebuilding and with cap space that in a year's time could convince themselves they're a QB away from playoff contention. Cousins is going to set the bar even as a 30+ year old QB for what a QB can make if he eventually hits free agency. I think WSH can only do this song and dance for one more season after this one before he can't be tagged again.
Cousins has played this like an ace and I don't mind seeing the team squirm. The game is rigged to favor them, so I'm not shedding any tears for WSH because it blew up in their face.Last edited by slickdtc; 07-18-2017, 06:33 AM.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
