Not sure how I feel regarding the expansion to the Rooney rule.

The league is now mandating that every team hire a minority at an offensive coach position. I'm not a fan of any kind of quota in general, but specifically here I think they are going about it the wrong way.

Its limited to the offensive side of the ball because they are satisfied with the number of defensive minority coaches. My thinking is instead of just blanket saying "now hire minorities on offense" they should look at why minorities have higher hire rates on the defensive side of the ball. My assumption is that it is due to a high number of offensive coaches being former quarterbacks.

Does the league have any programs designed to help retired players transition into coaching? Maybe start a new program centered around training camp. It could be something along the lines of undrafted free agents that are cut are eligible to join a staff as an assistant coach. Their salaries are paid by the league, similar to this new rule they implemented. That could create a pipeline for players who aren't quite good enough to play in the NFL have an avenue to BE in the NFL.

One of my beliefs is that there aren't as many minority coaches because the pool is more shallow. If that is the case, then mandating teams hire minority coaches doesn't really solve that problem. We need to expand the candidate pool. Ideally more should be done at the amateur level but the NFL can only control their league.

That’s the problem and they tried to address it a few years ago but this will require patience. It takes time to develop someone in to a head coaching candidate

They do, Mike Tice runs the program. Believe it's called NFL Alumni. As far as minority offensive coaches, it's just a matter of opportunity.

Both teams will now get a possession in OT. Playoffs only.

So if both teams score, does it keep going college style or does it become next team to score?

I guess we'll find out as my shared. But at the baseline I think this is all I wanted. Even if after that is tied. Next score wins. I can deal with that.

We’ll still hear how it’s unfair, but at least they tried.

Does add some intrigue to OT. Team 2 scores to tie in OT and what they decide to do. At that point, having already given up an OT TD, going for 2 and the win seems to make sense. But what about Team 1 going for 2 after the first score and forcing Team 2 to match them (or kick a GW XP).

We’ve got new exciting scenarios, but the problem remains about how we decide who gets first or second possession. I like different proposals but just giving home team the choice is the cleanest.

This makes it a massive advantage to kick off in OT. Not a fan. I keep saying the problem is the coin toss, but the NFL is too deep in bed with Big Coin to let it go.
Bills, Sabres, Illini, Cubs, basically any team that abuses its fanbase and I'm there.

From what I read, if Team 1 scores 8 (TD + 2pt) on the first possession it's game over.

EDIT: Nevermind. I think you were saying Team 1 goes for 2 and fails.

I see where you're coming from and I've considered that too. However, in the No Defense Allowed structure of today's NFL I don't think teams will kick for fear of the other team getting 8 points and preventing the kicking team from ever getting a possession. I guess we will see.

Are you sure about that? I know that was one of the proposals but from everything I’m seeing the new rule that passed guarantees each team a possession. Haven’t seen a mention today of a two point conversion caveat.

The change is better than nothing but it doesn’t solve anything if nobody can get a stop on defense

According to the AP release this 2 point stipulation that was proposed by the Titans was not approved so no matter what happens, each team gets a chance to possess.
