I can make some type of case for all these guys. I can also guess that Marvin Harrison might have some trouble getting in, although football-wise he should be a lock.Boston Red Sox

Re: NFL Off Topic
That changed though as Coryell's disciples filtered through the league. Joe Gibbs was once Coryell's offensive coordinator and for most of his career he stayed away from the Coryell offense though the '91 team was basically Air Coryell. Ernie Zampese was also on some of Coryell's staffs and brought those sensibilities to the Rams and passed it on to Norv Turner who brought many of those concepts to the Cowboys except rather than the goal of scoring as fast as you can they used it to feature Emmitt Smith and to milk the clock more. If you notice in watching games from that era the Cowboys ran a lot of plays straight out of the Coryell playbook and featured the tight end (Novacek) A LOT which is also another hallmark of Coryell. When Turner left for DC Zampese became the Cowboys' OC and brought even more Coryell type concepts to the offense.
So the offense WAS winning championships but it wasn't a pure Coryell offense. That would change with the Rams in 1999. As Vermeil and Martz basically lifted the entirety of the Coryell playbook, added a couple wrinkles and voila the Greatest Show on Turf was born. Vermeil has been on record multiple times saying that the '99 Rams were basically a tribute to Don Coryell's offense. If we jump forward to today while the read option owes more to the Run N' Shoot as a basis for inspiration there are faint echoes of Air Coryell with the deep patterns to WRs, making the RB a heavy part of the offense both running and catching the ball and keeping the TE involved. Hell, the modern day TE usage owes itself to Air Coryell and by extension the way the Browns used Ozzie Newsome. The Browns offense at the time was called "Air Coryell East" from about '79-83ish.
In the end, I think it's this transformation and ubiquitous nature of how the Coryell offense is still around in some form today kind of blunts Coryell's achievements. Here was a man who had a very good regular season record, is the 2nd winningest coach in Arizona Cardinals history and created an offense that was 30-35 years ahead of its time. He should get in there and it's a damn shame he isn't.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I never viewed the HoF as being for or about the fans, but as a single place to show recognition and respect for the people contributing to the sport's success.

For many players having the title of "Hall of Famer" is an additional source of income at trade shows and speaking engagements. Yes being inducted is a huge achievement but for older players it is also a way to supplement income, this is particularly important for players who did not play in todays NFL, where if you can make it to a second contract you are can basically make generational money.Moderator

Why complicate things?

Re: NFL Off Topic
Isn't this every offseason? He goes to a QB guru, becomes a better passer, and then he gets real guys trying to tackle him and he reverts to his natural motion. He needs to go prove it in the CFL or the Arena League before a team will look at him again IMO."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. Re: NFL Off Topic
I still think he can be a good QB in this league, but it would require a team to completely restart. New coach who wants Tebow, new offense, probably a lot of new players. Tebow won't succeed as a traditional QB. But an offense tailored to him? Sure, why not.
Then it would have to work or else you just sacrificed a few years of your time/money.
I doubt it ever happens. There have been incredible athletes who didn't get to basically have a team lay down a red carpet for them to come lead them to glory. As likeable as Tebow is as a person, I don't think anyone is going to do that or else we would've already seen it. All these teams that are rebuilding think they're a player or coach or two away from being competitive. No team is in such dire straits that they have to go for broke with a Tebow-led offense.
I wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot somewhere and see if the magic continues. It's so interesting what happened with Denver, I wanna see if it was the perfect storm.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Re: NFL Off Topic
I have a few ideas to help balance the game back out.
The first has been said several times on the previous page.
The second is quite simple: teach DBs and linebackers how to tackle. The flying shoulder move that many defenders like to do is cool looking when it works, but it is far less successful than trying to wrap a guy up.
The third is teaching man coverage. It amazed me when Leodis Mckelvin gave an interview about his improved man coverage this year and his reasoning for his better coverage on deep balls was, turning his head to look for the ball! So what I gathered from his interview was that from the time he was drafted until Mike Pettine became defensive coordinator nobody ever told him to play the football. Just put your arms up and hope you either get lucky (more likely pass interference) or tackle him after the 30+ yard gain.
I can't be the only one that notices DBs simple don't play the football that much. Other than getting away with a bunch of DPI (in today's soft rules), the shutdown corners of the NFL also play the damn football, they don't just stare down their guy and then throw their arms up.
I don't have a problem with him going for his dream... we should all go for our dreams. I have a problem with all the media reporting on it and all of the fans (have died down this last year) claiming that he deserves chances that he doesn't.Comment
