Not always true even in sports. At some point there's a threshold, not saying manziel is in that territory but that pic certainly is alarming.

I don't really have an issue with self destructive behavior, it's when it starts to harm others (including animals) that it becomes a problem for me.

If he wants to be coked out, fine. That's his problem.

I agree with this, I'm sure if Manziel turns out to be a phenom a lot of his antics will be swept under the rug by the media and fans but eventually something will happen to screw Manziel up. Big Ben nearly died before he calmed himself down and Vick had to spend time in the slammer as well. Hopefully for Gordon and maybe Manziel (if he gets to that level) they can stop their self destructive behavior before they wreck their lives much less their careers.

Nah, it's pretty much always true, especially in sports. As long as he keeps the off the field stuff off the field, then he'll be fine. The Browns will issue statements every so often when asked about a new picture but they won't do anything unless his non-football stuff negatively affects their record.

Big Ben's been mentioned, he won 2SB and Pittsburgh still looked at getting rid of him bc of off field. Moss is another one I'd mention. Brandon Marshall got ran out of Miami and Denver bc of off field stuff. Pac man. T.O.

Not saying Johnny raises to that level, but the warning signs are there and its past the point of being a guy who goes out occasionally.

TO and Randy Moss weren't really run out of the league, though. Both just got older and less able depend on their freak of nature athletics to play well. Teams still put up with their BS when those guys were tops.

I'm not sure why Vick is mentioned here unless you're talking about Marcus. Say what you want about him but he most definitely was not doing any of this crap on or off the field. Unless you're considering something like giving a fake name when he went to a clinic about an STD into this (which would be ridiculous imo), adding him is comparing apples and oranges. He didn't get a pass on anything and when the BIG issue was exposed he went to jail.

T.O. specifically, was a case of the bad outweighing the good though. There is absolutely no way T.O.'s TALENT couldn't help quite a few NFL teams but he couldn't get a job bc of the baggage that came with it. That was different than in the past bc his talent was that much better in the past.

Philly didn't re:T.O. I remember Moss having a couple of off field things before Minnesota let him go.
And @wwharton didn't Vick get caught w weed at an airport one time? I wasn't even thinking about Mr. Mexico lol. But Vick might have been a stretc I'll give you that.

With all of those guys you mentioned, their attitudes/non-football stuff was starting to negatively affect their teams and they were all given much longer leashes than players without their level of talent.

I still believe if T.O didn't pull that mess he did in Philly, he probably would've extended his career by at least 2 years at minimum. Wouldn't have been bouncing around from team to team like he was towards the end of his career.

Though I agree, McNabb and the management had their share of involvement in that entire fiasco.

The result was T.O. bouncing around and considered more like a talented joke than a future HOFer while McNabb and the management went on like business as usual. So, if one could go back in time and show T.O. a glimpse into the future, I would hope he wouldn't just say "well, as you can see, it wasn't all my fault."

I'm a fan of T.O. but people gotta stop thinking that all that matters is what numbers can be put up on the field. Whether it's just mouthing off like him, or weed like Gordon, or whatever. There are LOTS of aspects to being a professional, and being very good at one could cut you some slack in the others for a while, but they are all fools if they believe the others don't matter... it always catches up to them.
