Props to OS for taking the high road, but I really was just asking about his suspension, not really where you stand on what he said but I know that's a slippery slope. It's complete BS that he got suspended. Even though he didn't phrase what he meant properly, even if he was straight up defending Rice (which he wasn't at all), he shouldn't have been suspended.
You said it's exactly how you feel; is that only for 2 of the 4 or all 4?

All four. The way most of the media is handling this whole situation is annoying.

I thought all Stephen A was saying the exact same thing Whoopi Goldberg said on her program, which inexplicably got her in trouble. He just used way more words, and left more up for interpretation; which naturally was interpreted in the worst possible light. I dont think he meant any harm by it.

I don't even know if that's true. She said it on The View in front of an audience full of women and they were all clapping.

Are you talking about her defending Smith this week or her comments from months ago? Im talking about months ago when she commented on Solange and Jay Z (we couldnt be more off topic now). She said something about people having the right to hit someone back regardless of sex. It got to the point where Whoopi logged onto some social media platform to reiterate her point in response to all the negative feedback she got for her comments.

She basically said if you dont want to be hit, dont hit somebody. I read that as the core of what Stephen A meant. Specifically because the story reads as though Rice's wife hit him prior to the "knocking out". But I could be wrong.

                  ***sad face***

@AdamSchefter · 9h 49ers LB Aldon Smith, facing a significant suspension, is scheduled to meet with Roger Goodell in NY next Friday, Aug. 8, per NFL source.

I think we're talking about the same thing (haven't heard anything about her specifically defending Smith). She did get some negative reaction (of course, as you said) but the pretty much all female audience was clapping.

Anyway, bringing it back around to SAS, I think he was just the wrong sex (male) and said it on the wrong platform (espn), and as part of a rant about the wrong topic (Ray Rice's suspension). But none of those should've been reasons for him to get suspended.

I don't think what Stephen A. Smith said was wrong.

Women basically get a pass when they assault a man because we aren't supposed to hit back and they know and some take advantage and really push the buttons. Does it make it right for a man to hit back, no. but if you hit someone, don't be shocked if you get hit back.

If the women who hit's a man can't show restraint, don't get upset when the person you hit shows zero restraint as well.

People just need to keep their hands to themselves.

Pretty much, but even this is more "aggressive" than the point he was trying to make.

In short, he was saying women (and girls) shouldn't do anything to put themselves in the situation. For example, I don't think it's okay to rob people on the street but I know it happens so I'd tell my sister not to walk alone in shady areas at night.

The word "provoke" was stupid to use. But if we look at his point from a male perspective, telling some loud mouth to pipe down shouldn't get you hit... but you know there's a chance it would so you'll pick and choose when you'd say something and are careful with exactly what you say. Just because men shouldn't hit women doesn't mean women shouldn't still be careful what they say and do bc they assuming every man follows these rules... bc we know that's not true.

Anyway, I know I'm digging into why people were treading lightly on this topic but it pisses me off that we can't talk about details like this and still clearly feel domestic violence is wrong. Because men that think it's okay to hit women aren't going to stop hitting them just bc the public spotlight is on the issue right now. The only ones that can really learn from stuff like this is women, so why not give them any help to avoid the situation? I seriously wish Rice was suspending for 4 or 6 games so I didn't have to watch another example of the stupid mob mentality in this country. Hell, kicking him out of the league would've been better than having to see all the overreactions the other direction.

You're making my "I'm not doing this" post really difficult to stick by.

It's like saying "Well, people are going to keep murdering and there's nothing we can do to stop that, so let's teach everyone how not to be victims!"

At no times is this ok, nor did Smith say it was, but it's also naive to pretend it's not true. Again, nothing said even remotely suggested violence against women is ok. He made a fair, valuable point that woman should take this into consideration when putting hands on a male. Because not every man will keep his hands to himself when confronted by a woman physically.

Smith is being crucified for something he never said or suggested. Michelle Beadle took to Twitter twisting his comments, and the media took it from there.
Just... a man, typically, is physically capable of ending any conflict with a woman not involving a weapon nonviolently. If their instinct is to hit her, then their instinct is ****ing stupid and so are they. Walk away. Restrain her if necessary.

This idea that a woman can provoke a man into hitting her is... no. It's never a proportional response. In most cases, the woman can't kill the man if she does it right. In the vice versa case, that's true in most cases.

He knocked her the **** out. Unless she was trying to ****ing kill him, there's not much she could have done that I see as provoking him to clock her. That's far over the line.

Anyway, I'm not doing this. Scout's honor this time.
