Don't have the link since I'm on my phone, but just read on MSN that KC and SF have a deal that is "effectively complete" for Alex Smith. Just waiting for March 12th to make it official.

I never knew this. Pretty cool.

Young NFL.com readers will hear the name Ed O’Neill and think of Jay from the current TV hit “Modern Family.” Slightly older fans will immediately think of Al Bundy from “Married… With Children.” And even older fans will remember Ed O’Neill as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Well, maybe not. Even the most die-hard Steelers fan probably has no idea that O’Neill, once a defensive end at Youngstown State University, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Steelers in the summer of 1969.

I'm glad he never made it in the NFL. We would never have been blessed with Married With Children.

Jerruh just wants ya'll to know that when the Cowboys win the Super Bowl, to give him the credit:

Jones, however, admitted that any changes the Cowboys make because of their lack of success since their last Super Bowl title in 1995 will only go so far.
There is no chance he even considers removing himself as general manager, a title he has held since buying the team on Feb. 25, 1989.
Jones understands questions and criticism from fans about the team’s struggles of late. He says will just continue trying to get it right, but he reiterated he is not going anywhere and will be ready to accept the praise when the Cowboys finally get it done.
“I pretty much go with what I did the night I bought the team,” Jones said. “I said I was going to be the GM. … It would be a facade if someone else was sitting in my shoes and someone thought they were spending the money. It would be deception. … I would grant you the decisions that have been made over the years have not produced a Super Bowl, two Super Bowls or three Super Bowls that I would like to have been a part of. And the only thing I am going to do there is keep trying and then make sure I get the credit when we do get that one. Y’all are going to give it to me, aren’t you?”
            Jones then smiled, uncomfortably.

Tom Brady signs a 3-yr $27M extension through 2017. By all accounts a home-town discount for the Patriots.

There's talk that this could affect the contract negotiations of Tony Romo and Joe Flacco, but given the price of the QB franchise tag I don't see how either loses any leverage other than for the owner / GM / capologist to say "don't be greedy, be more like Tom Brady".

It save the Pats 15 million over the next two years (7 one, 8 the other) , when the salary cap is going to be lower from all expectations. That's called a player actually being aware of putting the team before himself - he's going to get plenty of money anyway, no need to **** the team over.

The entire new contract is guaranteed as well, paying him guaranteed money until he's 40. That seems odd.

He could have easily said no to restructuring the deal and kept his salary cap hip at the 15+ million it could've been. Instead he gives the Pats some much needed cap relief (7/8 million can go a long way), when they have plenty of areas to improve and some big FAs to try and bring back.

The new part isn't the point. Pretty much everyone knows by now that this year and next year, and potentially the following year, are going to have a tight, flat salary cap from all reports. This restructuring basically negates that for the Pats as they gain the extra million. His number balloons when the next extension hits, but the hope is the salary cap will finally jump up to counter that.

As much as I appreciate seeing him doing this it's nothing unique, Big Ben did the same thing a couple years ago.

They are getting their money one way or another and it benefits him to do this in order to have a better supporting cast around him.

True, but how many players actually do that and not worry about "getting theirs". As much as we here about holdouts, it's always cool to read things like this. Especially when it's one of the premiere players at the premier position of the NFL.
