Why yall looking at that post and just carving out CPOE? I have no idea what it is either, but I don't need to because the passing chart and Hooe's statements are the main course here.

For whatever reason when it comes to advanced stats for NFL QBs we all know we have yet to find one that is really worth a damn. Other sports we can argue about which is better but for whatever reason here the argument is "are there any that are not worthless?"
If by "ya'll" you are including me, all I did was answer his question with a "no" and point out another useless stat - QBR.

I would bet that Steve Young does not. He was as competitive as anyone who played in the league. It would be like asking him if he regrets being Steve Young.

looked it up, according to CPOE Malik Willis is the third best QB in the NFL (Jordan Love 35th), and Will Levis is #7, we can pick and choose all the stats we want, but this metric ranks Skyler Thompson above CJ Stroud, and Justin Fields ahead of Lamar Jackson, do these numbers actually mean anything?
CPOE is Completion Percentage Over Expected. It's an analytic measure which compares a player's actual completion percentage against an "expected completion percentage" computation which encompasses field position, down, distance, air yards, whether the QB was hit, and other factors.

Basically, it's a measure which attempts to give quarterbacks additional credit for completing more difficult passes, as opposed to just dinking and dunking all the time. The theory is that longer completions which travel further through the air and gain more yards for the offense are more indicative of quality quarterback play than routinely throwing short passes to YAC merchants.

It has its drawbacks, but it is a more in-depth measure of a quarterback's performance than simple completion percentage. I imagine it might be pretty noisy in smaller sample sizes as well.

While we're on the subject of analytics: ESPN Total QBR is a much better statistic than traditional passer rating. Passer rating double-counts completions and has arbitrary caps placed upon various components of its formula, those caps having no basis in anything. Total QBR is a far more contextual measure which attempts to inform how a quarterback performs in meaningful game situations (i.e. not blowouts or garbage time) and actions which lead to the offense scoring points are weighted more heavily (in particular, the expected points added measure which is a fundamental component of the Total QBR formula values yardage gained closer to the opponent's end zone).

It is important to note that the formula for Total QBR has changed over time (the article you linked was originally posted in 2015), and Charlie Batch is now nowhere to be found on the updated single-game all-time leaderboard.

The frustrating thing to me is I want these analytics to tell me something my eyes aren't seeing. My eyes saw Wilson woefully miss Austin on a couple short passes while not getting hit, no analytics needed. His CPOE will be low as hell because he's expected to make those throws.

Daniels made a spectacular TD throw while getting hit, his CPOE will get a huge bump, but I could see with my eyes what an amazing play that was.

and sample size, well yeah you posted a one game result

tbh I'm not trying to be anti analytics guy, I'd just like to understand better and having "computations" defined by estimations drives me crazy

Oh great the Chiefs are on the verge of acquiring DHop. Mahomes could probably make the water boy into a decent receiver. Hate to see what he can do with a motivated Hopkins.

I like the moves. Don't care about the 7th, a 5th is fine for Williams. Think Khan waited too long on WR tbh.

Article about what Clyde Edwards-Helaire is going through, the events that resulted in and then recently aggravated his PTSD, and have left him on the NFI list this season while he works through things.
