I found a good read on Bruce Irvin and his background for those unfamiliar. ESPN is ripping the guy apart like he's a paroled felon with murder and armed robberies, which is ridiculous. Good luck Bruuuuuuuuuce!!!

They better be ready. No more double teaming Red Bryant, because Bruce is coming in off of the edge.Comment

Re: 2012 NFL Draft Thread.
Amazed that the Steelers were able to get Mike Adams that far down in the 2nd. Character issues are usually a red flag for Colbert, but a possible day one starting LT is hard to pass up.
Still unsure about the Sean Spence pick. Was hearing talk of making him a SS, but Keith Butler wants him to work behind Timmons and Foote.Comment

Re: 2012 NFL Draft Thread.
I know I will probably get hammered for this, because Lions fans seem to feel that GM Martin Mayhew can do no wrong, and Lions fans get offended at anyone who questions him, but I am really questioning some of our picks the last few years, especially this one.
First off, I hated, and still hate the Nick Fairley pick last year, and so far he has done nothing to dispel my opinion. With all of the character and off-the-field concerns surrounding Fairley, coupled with the fact that our Defensive Tackle rotation was already strong, I felt we had greater needs to use that pick for. Combine that with the fact that (CB) Prince Amukamara fell right in our laps, yet we decided to pass him up for Fairley instead? Fast forward to this year, and that decision hurts even more given our total inability to acquire any kind of decent Cornerback talent.
Draft Day 1
I do not understand the logic behind the Lions passing on a falling (OG) David DeCastro in favor of (RT) Riley Reiff. In 2001 the Lions really wanted to draft (OG) Steve Hutchinson, but Seattle picked him one spot ahead of us, so we ended up settling for (OT) Jeff Backus instead. Hutchinson went on to have a very great career, while Backus has been a solid-to-serviceable starter. It seems like history is repeating itself, except that this time the Lions had a chance to get Steve Hutchinson 2.0, yet they passed on him for a guy who can’t play LT (he has short arms) and had a poor showing at the combine (coming in very much out of shape didn't help either). While I HATED the Nick Fairley pick last year, the Riley Reiff pick is more of a head scratcher because of DeCastro’s availability.
We need help on our entire Offensive Line other than (LG) Rob Sims. That is why I felt the Lions should have taken the best available Offensive Lineman at that point, which was definitely David DeCastro. Stephen Peterman is a penalty machine at RG, and we HAVE to establish our running game much more this season. Again, I don’t absolutely hate the Riley Reiff pick, because he does fill a need, and traditionally Wisconsin and Iowa Offensive Linemen do very well in the NFL, but I don't see how you pass on a (pretty much) sure-fire Steve Hutchinson 2.0 when you have as many holes on our O-Line as we do.
Draft Day 2
I love (WR) Ryan Broyles as a player, but I almost went through the roof when the Lions selected him. We selected (WR) Titus Young last year in the 2nd Round, and he looks to be the real deal. Throw Young in him with Megatron, Nate Burleson, Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler and the Lions have plenty of weapons on offense. WE NEED CORNERBACKS! Why not take a late 2nd round/early 3rd round rated corner like Josh Robinson out of UCF or Casey Heyward out of Vanderbilt with the 54th pick? Especially if this guy is probably going to have to start for you Day 1. I just don't get it. Maybe the Lions plan to cut Nate Burleson or something like that, but then what? How does that help our cornerback situation? We already lost out on Asante Samuel (went to Atlanta for a lowly 7th round pick), now we go after Mike Jenkins, a castoff from the Cowboys with injury issues? We tried that with Eric Wright last season and the guy got toasted like nobodies business. Most websites had Wright statistically rated as one of the lower corners in the league last season, so that experiment didn't work.
I don't mind the (CB) Dwight Bentley pick in the 3rd round, but based on how we drafted, I felt it was too little too late for the Lions. Bentley seems to grade out as a Nickel or Dime back, so once again, now what do we do? We are staring at Chris Houston and Jacob Lacey being our starting CB's, with either Aaron "I get toasted more than Eric Wright" Berry or Dwight Bentley as our Nickel corner. This pick would have looked much better if we would have added a corner like Josh Robinson or Casey Heyward as I stated earlier. At least we would be building some depth with young talent at the cornerback position. Maybe on Draft Day 3 we will somehow be able to pick up a guy like (CB) Brandon Boykin who was expected to go earlier in the draft, but that is wishful thinking at this point.
In my opinion, the way things fell this year, the perfect draft for the Lions for rounds 1-3 would have been:
1st Round: (OG) David DeCastro
2nd Round: (CB) Casey Heyward
3rd Round: (CB) Dwight Bentley
I am not necessarily saying the Lions are losers in this draft, but I don't feel like we are winners either, simply because the draft seemed to fall in a favorable way for the Lions to pick up better prospects (or better fits) at the positions where we drafted, and we didn't.Last edited by Illustrator76; 04-28-2012, 12:55 PM.Comment
