This is truly a sad day no matter what was going through his mind.

Wow, who would have thought Seau would have died before Ryan Leaf? During the Leaf mess I kept thinking about Junior breaking up a locker room confrontation between Leaf and a reporter.

      RIP

        RIP Seau.

If this is due to the head injuries that occur to players after they laave the game, then yes im all for player safety to the highest degree.

The bigger we make helmets and facemasks, and the more padding we put on them, the more people will use them as a weapon. I played football in high school, and then used to play (hard) tackle football with friends every weekend after high school. I never got diagnosed with a concussion (this was 10 years ago), but I got my "bell rung" more playing with a helmet than without. So take it for what it's worth.
Same experience. Only played one year of organized football, on high school. More bell-ringing moments in that one season then in 7 years of playing hard tackle football every weekend with friends.

On topic, just finished writing a paper on concussion in sports today... This news only backs up the point that something must be done. Enforcement of rules AND medical procedure. We saw examples of obviously concussive hits on guys, and they continued to play. Colt McCoy, for example.

Yup, I was depressed & had the same thoughts in High School due to a medication's side effects. Looking back on it, it's still hard to understand where my head was...even though I lived through it.

Sweet Lord of Mercy, this is terrible news. The Chargers kinda became my AFC team when LaDainian Tomlinson was drafted by them. Seau was only there for a few years while Tomlinson was there, but he played the game hard. What a man; what a player.

This. I too have put words down on paper in a suicide note; sounds like the exact same way you did it. When I did that, I was acting rationally based on what I thought was reality. It's only by the grace of God that I was interrupted by somebody who eventually helped me before I could pull the trigger.

If there is anyone here that suffers from depression or who has had suicidal thoughts, now is the time to get help. It's not a stigma, it is a mental disease that can be eased and sometimes cured. There are many ways to help yourself, and you are not alone. Please get help if you need it, even if it's just a friend to talk to, or a doc to listen. Please...

Wow, what the hell. Just saw this in OS Neighborhood, thought it was a bad joke or something. I only rooted for the chargers once (against the 49ers in the Super Bowl) but Seau was always one my favorite NFL players back then.

Man, this is terrible, especially for the children. How old are they?

                          RIP Junior.

Very shocked by this. I can't imagine what family and friends are going through. I've been fortunate to not have to face tragedies like this with anyone close to me thus far in life.

It sucks it happened this way, but I suspect that the tone of discussion on the NFL's emphasis on safety will shift big time. There are still a lot of people out there who act like the league has been overprotective. If research shows a link between head trauma and any kind of disorder that may have caused serious depression in Seau, then some people are finally going to take notice. The research is already out there, but because of his success, Seau will get much more attention and be a face of this issue.
