Kickers or Punters have no business in the Hall of Fame.

Not to disrupt this thread, but I sincerely disagree. Punters do far more than people want to admit. The Hall of Fame should acknowledge the greatest players of all time, this includes the greatest punters and kickers of all time.

I mean, if we are only going to include great football players, I think we should exclude every player since they stopped playing both sides of the ball seeing as players only specialized at one position beyond this point and time.

Greatest players of all time. Not guys who aren't players and are only on the field 3 or 4 times a game. It's the Hall of Fame.

With all the logjams we've had on the ballots recently, people really want to use one of the slots on a punter or a kicker? If guys like Drew Pearson, Jerry Kramer, Cris Carter or Terrell Davis aren't in the Hall, why would we put Ray Guy or Janikowski in? Does anyone really believe Sebastian Janikowski had the same kind of impact on the football landscape as Drew Pearson or Davis?

        Come on.

Who cares if it's 3 or 4 plays a game. Kickers score more points than pretty much any other position in the game of Football and they have to kick plenty of game winning field goals that win games. Why exclude people from the Hall of Fame because they're punter/kickers? The Hall of Fame is supposed to be for the great players in football at every position. Not just offensive and defense positions.

It's not an either or situation. Putting kickers/punters in doesn't mean keeping out players at other positions, at least it shouldn't. Cris Carter, Tim Brown, etc should have been in years ago, but that's another discussion entirely.

Given by the rules you can have a maximum number of 7 per year, then yes it certainly can be keeping players out at other positions.

Are we really having this discussion? People really want kickers and punters in the HOF?

Given that the OP brought up the name of a punter, and others in the thread found it as valid, then yes, we really are having this discussion.

You've made your point that you disagree, which is fine.

So the HOF should completely ignore two of the most crucial positions in all of football? The NFL Hall of Fame should recognize the best all time at getting that hidden yardage, as well as the guys that came through to actually win the games.

If they were crucial positions you'd have a point. Again I ask, did Shane Lechler have a bigger impact on the game than say Drew Pearson or Jerry Kramer?

Did Sebastian Janikowski contribute more to his teams success than say Terrell Davis?

Kickers and Punters have no business in the HOF. I doubt you'll see any gain entrance any time soon.

Vinatieri probably has as strong a case as any kicker in history. A lot of big kicks in big games. Ask Ravens and Bills fans how important a good kicker can be.

Very well could have. There is a big difference between starting at the 30-35 than your own 5-10. As for kickers, kickers win games. A good kicker can be the difference between wide right, and a Superbowl ring. A few yards are the difference between hero and goat.

I'm sorry, but its like I said earlier, if punters and kickers should be by default left out, so should anybody who did not play multiple position, or both sides of the ball. Hall of Fame caliber Football players should be able to play multiple positions of both sides of the ball, or else they are merely great position players, but not football players.

What other punters would you guys consider for HOF? It's a extremely small pool. That's why I think it's harmless for them to be considered for the HOF.

And punters impact is so understated. A great one can be the difference, a terrible one can be as well. There's a ton of guys in the middle, there's just not many at the top.

Kickers are a different story. Most kickers these days have the leg to kick those 50+ yard FG's and more and more, 60+ yard FG's. I think we're still scratching the surface with length and accuracy (moreso length). When a kicker starts being able to consistently make 50 yarders, that will change the game. That's taking away 32-35 yards (plus wherever the drive began) of field to go to get at least 3 points.

So Morten Anderson and pretty much all kickers... Nah. Lechler/Guy, yes.

Upon further review I think Lechler makes it one day, Punters/Kickers make a huge impact on a game.

I'm not sure Ray Guy makes it because of how long it's taking, but I see Andersen, Lechler, and probably Vinatieri/Seabass making it one day.
