Re: Is (Insert Player Here) A Hall of Famer?

Seems like yesterday when people used to say that Kickers and Punter weren't all that important.

I'd personally put a great K in ahead of a great Olineman. I know that'll create a firestorm lol.
    Ok, so make the case.

Why should guy like Janikowski make it in over say....a Jonathan Ogden or an Orlando Pace or a Walter Jones?

A great kicker in a close game can be the difference between a win and a loss. Again, no one is saying that every good kicker should be considered, but if a kicker's exceptional at his position, they should be considered just like players at any other position.

Did Janikowski win those games though or did his team put him in position to win them?

I understand he did his part, but do we want to start putting people on a pedestal for the one thing they are hired to do?

Here's the way I think of the whole importance argument

If a random fan from the stands can do it at the level done by that position 10 years ago, then it isn't important enough to be considered for that sports hall of fame.

The problem with that logic is that Fans today think they can do anything a player can do hence why we have so many MMQBs/Armchair Coaches and GMs out here.

Let me ask this. If we're going to say making kicks is what a kicker is supposed to do, that's his job. Why don't we say those things about the other flashy positions? Seriously. Quarterbacks are supposed to go down the field and score touchdowns (or in some cases get his team in position for field goals) and win games. So why do we praise the players who do that on a consistent basis for long periods of time as great players? They're just doing they're jobs..right?

I personally feel like I could lead a team down the field for a TD even though I haven't played a down of QB in my whole life.

John Elway was not the engine that drove that offense in 97 and 98. It was Davis. That's actually quite obvious.

I am not sure what the last sentence has to do with anything. Blanda also played QB, and got in on the length of service award. He was 48 when he retired. Personally he's not a HOF'er in my book either.

                    Yes.

They are on the field for a much longer time frame and have a far larger impact on the game. You know that as well as I do.

I don't understand what about my argument is hard to understand, if you disagree just say so. Please stop using the bad argument I made about "being paid to do their job" as I've already admitted it was bad.

Quarterbacks, receivers, runningbacks, linebackers, and defensive backs are on the field the ENTIRE game.

Punters and kickers are on couple times a night.

I appreciate their ability but they are not hall of fame worthy.

Agreed. Some of them are great at what they do. But they have no business in the hall.

I'd like to see this argument made. How is a Kicker more important than a great Olineman?

I can already give you the argument:

                          "They win games"
