He was there in 07. And that's why I put successful in quotations.

Campbell was off to a good start in 2011 before he got hurt. Probably would have made the playoffs that year if not for that, but he goes down, we make the greatest trade in nfl history, and the rest is just that, history.

Russell would have failed anywhere, even a journeyman like Bruce Gradkowski immediately outperformed him and was better for us than he was. I'm not buying the "blame it on Oakland" angle on this one.

Yeah it depends on what "successful" means because Palmer actually had a pretty good year. Campbell was also off to a good start. The team hasn't won so if that's all you're looking for then the answer is no one, but not all QBs in Oakland have been completely garbage.

Culpepper, btw, wasn't very good out there if I remember correctly.

My memory is a little hazy but I feel like he was trading starts with Josh McCown.

I'm surprised they won 5 games in 2009 with Russell, JP Losman, Bruce Gradkowski, and Charlie Frye.

He was trading starts with somebody. Can't remember who it was and how much injury played a role. I could just google it but it's not even worth it, lol. I do think it's more interesting that the guy QBing the Raiders just last year is lumped in with this group. Palmer had a decent season.

If he can stay away from his "Purple Drank" and keep the wait off I actually think he can be somewhat successful. He has a cannon for an arm

I remember Culpepper having like a few games where he may have put up okay numbers.

Mostly, I just remember him pointing to his knee and putting up an A-OK sign with his fingers, a nod to his recovery from a messed up knee injury.

I think that was the game against Miami where he had 3 rushing touchdowns, kind of as a way to say "**** you for cutting me".

It sounds like he's grown up a lot more since then and seems to have put in some fantastic work with Jeff Garcia to even get down to 260.
Plenty of other players found ways to deal with all of that though...

Maybe it's just his build, but I feel Russell could stand to lose another 20 pounds or so.

Brock Oseweiler (Denver) is I think 6'8-6'10 and about 235-240

Roethlisberger is 6'5 and over 240lbs. Newton is 6'5 and 245lbs.

Russell at 260, 265, IMO, is fine.

He makes good points. I'd prefer to go through the draft, but as long as he does well in this workout with Chicago, I can see interest ramping up. I really believe this tryout with Chicago could bump him up or bury him. If they see the same things, he's done. If there's real improvement, I can see more and more tryout offers and potential contract negotiations.
