Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread

    My thoughts on Day One:

Love the movement by the Browns from 4 to 9, and back up to 8 to grab Gilbert, who is going to do tremendous next to Haden. Then moving from 26 to 22 to get Manziel, who I think may have been considered at four was just the icing on the cake. Also acquired a 1st in next year's draft while only losing a 3rd & 5th in this years draft during the trading.

I've learned to accept the Giant's pick. I wanted Lewan and he went one pick before because Tennessee needed an offensive linemen...I guess? But apparently Jerry Reese had such a hard on for Beckham Jr that he was the pick regardless.

Im not sure what use two Victor Cruzes are when Eli is getting blasted 1.5 seconds after each snap. So yeah, Im sure he'll be a playmaker for us, but I dont like his size, I dont like that hes not an offensive linemen, and I dont like that he wasn't really a need. But some analysts (lol) say hes an upgrade to Hakeem Nicks; and I can at least take solace that Beckham will give it his all and not phone it in week one like Nicks.

Im just hoping someone good slides to us in the second. Moses from Virginia would be nice. Anyone else I want would be a miracle to get to us.

        +1

Someone remind me if all successful QB's now playing in the NFL "killed" it on pro day. He will prove many wrong.

Minny got the best QB at #32. GREAT move.

I know it won't happen because we won't go WR two picks in a row, but man, I would love if we got Lee or Allen Robinson to go with VJax and Evans. We DESPERATELY need a 3rd receiver/tight end.

I can't say I knew a lot about Marcus Smith when he was drafted last night so I was a bit disappointed with the pick. Since then, I've ready quite a few scouting reports and have watched some game tape of him myself and I'm starting to really like the pick.

He's a big, fast, edge rusher who can do it all. He can set the edge in the run game, has the speed and quickness to get after the QB, and he's really good in coverage for a college DE. His coverage skills perhaps impressed me the most. For a college DE he did a great job dropping in zone. Smith will get a year of development as a role player then hopefully take Trent Cole's job. He's just got to improve his technique as a pass rusher, but I think he can do that.

Not to mention we picked up a 3rd round pick to move back 4 spots and we still got our guy. Smith may have not been in the 1st round in most mock drafts, but I like the fit here and I think he's a good player. Considering what the board looked like at our pick, I like the move.

I've adopted the Browns as my distant team until Manziel gets cut and traded.

My Pats took Easley and I'm so disappointed... We won't get Jace Amaro now without trading up, and even if they were bent on getting a DL player, Kony Ealy is clearly the better player. Easley is third round talent at best and that's when he's not injured, which can be a lot.

I love the Rams picks. I think they said Robinson can play at guard to start which is perfect. They have Saffold and Long at tackle and Robinson can develop into a left tackle. A guard at #2 is not where you'd want to grab him but I think everyone saw this guy as the most freakish OL out there with a huge ceiling. Perfect scenario for him to come in and not be thrown into the fire at LT.

Aaron Donald is just that guy who seems like he is going to give it everything he has for the team and just makes plays. The defensive line is absolutely SICK with Quinn - Brockers - Donald - Long. With that talent around him it'll be great for him to go under the radar.

The Rams had great positioning in the draft and they made some solid picks. I was hoping for Gilbert @ #13 but that just wasn't gonna happen.

I really wanted my Chargers to get Dennard (who I thought would go much higher) but the damn Bengals threw a wrench in that one pick before. However I do really like Varrett and was thinking that's who we'd get all along anyways so I'm very happy with this pick. That's 3 years in a row Chargers. Let's keep the good 1st Rd drafting trend up.

I don't understand the Lewan pick. Titans weren't hurting for a tackle, or OL in general at all. Roos is still a pretty solid LT and they just signed Oher to play RT. Had a decent backup swing tackle behind those 2.

I know Roos is in the last yr of a contract, but the timing of a 1st round pick @ tackle was odd at least. Only thing I think they did was BPA, as I think Ebron, Gilbert or Barr would've been the pick had they gotten that far.

But in today's NFL, most 1st rounders are starters out the gate, and now we have 3 serviceable to above average starters. Lewan's not replacing Warmack or Levitre @ guard. Just an odd pick and frustrating in that it almost screams of this year being a redshirt year for Wisenhunt.

I would normally be commenting on how confusing the Lions' pick is and wondering what their overall strategy is, but instead I got hammered last night with friends and stopped thinking about it. Many decades of being a Lions fan has finally allowed me to properly deal with the Lions' front office: the answers are at the bottom of a bottle.

I'm really interested to see what Buffalo does today. It would probably make sense for them to add a TE or O-lineman, but I know Marrone is really high on Carlos Hyde and doesn't really like the RBs that they currently have.

Lions pick made zero sense with Fuller and Dennard being on the board.

A definite head scratcher. This, and the Jags taking Bortles at #3, were the worst top-10 picks by far IMHO.
