Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread

Underwhelmed with the Panthers draft overall. I'm not sure what to think about Benjamin. I know he's huge and everything, but only 1 good year in college worries me a bit. A lot will be expected of him this year and he doesn't seem physically ready to step up and produce at the level that people will want (and ultimately the team will need).

I understand the Ealy pick in the 2nd round given the huge cap numbers that CJ and Hardy will have next year (allowing one of them to leave or force a restructure for CJ), but I would've preferred Morgan Moses knowing that Byron Bell is the starting LT at this point in the offseason.

The rest of the draft was just "meh" in my mind. I don't know anything about the CB from SJSU that was drafted, and Tyler Gaffney seemed like a luxury pick that the team couldn't really afford (same as the Kenjon Barner pick last year in the 6th round.. there were other needs and players available that could've fit).

Hopefully Gettleman can find some more UDFA gems like he did last year.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread

I have no idea how to grade the Cowboys draft.

Zack Martin pick - justifiable, and he's a good prospect, though probably not the best value going for a RT/G combo in the middle of the first round.

Demarcus Lawrence - looks like a disruptive player, and Dallas absolutely has need on the DL, but I don't like that we gave up a Rd 3 to Washington to get him.

Anthony Hitchens - I don't know who this is.

Devin Street - developmental player for a future #2 WR, I guess? He's obviously got talent being Pitt's all-time leading catcher. I probably would have looked harder at getting another DL, personally.

Five seventh round picks - impossible to grade. It's easy for anyone to say "oh they got such a steal" for any of them, but... they were seventh round picks.

So yeah, my grade is a solid ?.

I can say without a doubt that if he gets a chance, Will Smith from Texas Tech can step in and make plays. He was one of the leaders of that unit, and was near the ball every single play.

              .

Despite the WR need I think it was a bad fit at least just in terms of what the Panthers are going to expect right now. If ya'll had kept Smith it'd be great, but he's gonna drop too many in the beginning of his career to be the #1 guy.

That's my fear, which is why I would've preferred Lee. Lee seems to have a lower ceiling, but a higher floor and could come in and produce immediately.

Oh well, I'll hope for the best. Benjamin will certainly have an opportunity for Rookie of the Year.

Not Tommy per se, but if he didn't tear his knee and miss almost everypart of the evaluation season he would've been arguably the top QB in this draft. He has it all. Pocket awareness, can drive the ball, has the touch, was able to move guys with his eyes, threw guys open and was a leader on the field.

Like I say a Tom Brady type guy. The value that KC got for him is amazing (as far as the draft goes.) as far as skill set goes. There is a long ways between today and his NFL career, but I really like his game and think that he can only get better. Especially playing for an offensive mind like Andy Reid.

I dunno I just like the kid and hope he does great things in the league.

I still think Murray is going to be the second best quarterback in the draft next to Bridgewater. Like Rob said, his fall had to do with his injury. Had he not been injured, we'd probably have had 4 quarterbacks taken in the first.

Yes. Love Janis. I think the Packers Draft was solid, only Pick I wasn't crazy about was Rodgers.

That many people are high on Murray? Interesting. I'm much more intrigued with Mettenberger.

I'm hoping Ebron can catch on quick to the offense. If so he can be a big time player for us. Van Noy I expect to start right away and contribute. I like the Jones and Reid picks. Should attribute some depth for their respective positions.

Larry Webster intrigues me. He is freakish athlete. Can't wait to see how we develop him.
Here is my grading of the draft:

Eric Ebron (TE)- He was the best player on the board at the time, but it seemed like a luxury pick and I would have been happier moving down. He could turn out to be a total stud, however.

Kyle Van Noy (OLB)- Moved up in the 2nd (down from the 4th to the 5th and traded a 7th) to get him. He was my best 4-3 OLB on the board at the time. I think he can contribute right away. Fills a need as well.

Travis Swanson (C)- I don't know much about the guy, but I'm always happy to take OL. Dominic Riaola's career is coming to an end, so he'll get to learn for a year like Reiff did before taking the reigns.

Nevin Lawson (CB)- Small corner, but I like him a lot. Always good to stock up on secondary.

Larry Webster III (DE)- Upside pick. Freakish athlete, only played 2 years of Football though.

Caraun Reid (DT)- Traded down in the 5th, picked up a 7th. Our actual 5th is gone from when we traded for Mike Thomas. QoC is questioned, but he looked good at the senior bowl. Fits the scheme.

TJ Jones (WR)- Slot receiver. Good hands, which is nice after how many drops we had last year.

Nate Freese (K)- Didn't miss a kick last year. We do need a kicker, but I don't know if it was worth using a pick on. I bet we bring in a veteran for him to compete against.

Draft looks pretty solid, similar to last year. Rounds out the front 7 nicely, got Raiola's replacement and some more weapons. Still wish we could have added a veteran corner in free agency.

Looks like the Lions wanted Tom Savage (went one pick before we took Larry Webster thankfully), Zach Mettenberger (had opportunity but didn't want him before sixth round apparently ), or David Fales in round six. I actually wanted Fales in round six, but the Bears jumped on him six picks before us. I think he would have been better than our current backup options.

Franklin doesn't have near the upside of Fales imo.
