People wonder why I felt like calling out the overreactions... it gets tiring. I know the season is over but there is SO MUCH MORE to talk about than a press conference and fumble. The Denver D needed to break Cam, mentally and physically... cut off the head of the snake. People want to give them props but then pile on the broken man? To each their own I guess.

You could go to any water cooler on Monday morning and hear, "why didn't he dive for the ball ?" At the gym I go to, I had my headphones on and I still heard that chatter above the noise in the headphones.

Edit- Your starting sentence reminds me of a line in MASH. I've talked to everyone in camp, and that is a first for me.

Super late to the party but I think honestly he pulled back because he realized he was beat to the ball and he thought it would get pushed back towards him. Even live I actually thought he'd recover it BECAUSE of that and I might have done the same. No sense diving when you're too late and have a better shot at the loose ball ricochet no? This coming from a Peyton fan who wanted Denver to win. Very surprised I didn't already read my point of view from another poster.

Cam said today if he would have dove for the ball, one of his legs would have been contorted and he might have had an injury.

“I don’t dive on one fumble because the way my leg was—it could have been [contorted] in a way,” Newton said. “OK, you say my effort. I didn’t dive down. I fumbled. That’s fine. But we didn’t lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that.”

Well I stand corrected, but either way, how many times have we seen balls bounce around and squirt loose. The reaction in and of itself at least to me looked more like anticipation than cowardice.

At least that's what I'm told. Or maybe that's because I've heard his name get mentioned so many times for some random reason since the game.
Fortunately ESPN hasn't gotten to bullet point #7653 of this discussion yet:
                - Subway Eat Fresh Hot Take: Tim Tebow would've dove for that ball.

Ha ha! I meant to highlight that part more. Really is sad. I do like reading through all the reactions after games though, and it being the superbowl, I hate to admit... I was looking forward to it.

Of course it's being talked about, and I've got no problem with it being talked about here. People calling him selfish and a quitter and everything else though? Yeah, I would've walked away from that watercooler discussion too.

Personally, when I saw the first replay I thought he didn't have much of a shot at it. You can see he's running forward and the ball appears right at his foot. I'd say he should've dove just for principles sake but would've been completely out of the play. I know others have been arguing arm/shoulder injury (like Brees) but I don't even think that was possible because of his position when the ball was in front of him. I would've liked to see him get more in the scrum after the ball skirted out though.

He would've just gotten on one knee.

I think at that point once it squirted back towards him he was in worse position to do anything. He reaches down for it as he's falling to the ground but it's moving past him at that point.

For as much talk as Carolina's field got in the Divisional round, the Super Bowl was way worse. Guys were slipping all over the place.

Ehh, anyone who had been following that field knew it was going to be trouble. I posted a link to an article in the other SB thread about it. That field has been problematic since it opened.

Oh I know. There was only one play where I really remember it affecting anything, so I don't think it was a big deal. But I didn't think it was in Carolina either and the broadcast kept harping on it.
