    Re: Week 14 Discussion Thread

I want to see a team that wins the coin toss defer. Like, if they have a hell of a defense and a kicker or something like that (plus the wind going in their direction).

I'm sure it would blow up in their face if they tried something like that, but it would certainly be an interesting strategy.

Speaking of strategy, I've drawn so many plays in my head the last fifteen years that I've never seen in a game, either because it's too stupid or not legal, but I gotta call them out at some point and seek whether they could work at all.

Belichick did it back in 2013 against the Bronco's on a windy night.

I would be interested to see the winning % of the receiving team since they changed the OT rules. Kicking off does have some benefits....obviously you have to keep the opponent out of the end zone. But if they don't score, you only need a FG to win (the receiving team needed a TD). And if you hold them to a FG on the opening drive, you know what you need to tie, and can approach every series with a 4 down strategy.

The deferral that I always remember is Marty Morhinweg’s Lions against Chicago in the early 2000s. They lost and he got crushed for it. Apparently no other coach did for ten years after that decision. LOL

@Blzer: Here’s an article with results on taking the wind in OT: http://www.quirkyresearch.com/footba...-toss-kicking/
        NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
        NFL - Buffalo Bills
        MLB - Cincinnati Reds

So if Team A wins the toss and drives for a TD. Then team B does the same. Team A then kicks a FG as time expires, no one is complaining that the coin-toss gave a team two possessions while the other only got one?

And if we are still tied after 15 minutes, we play 15 more?

Say they start at their own 20. They go into EVERY drive knowing it's a four down drive. That's an advantage the Eagles didn't have.

                It's fine as is.
But they didn't get the ball. If they started with it, the Eagles may never have gotten it.

I have no stake in the outcome of that game.

My argument would be the same if the Giants had won the toss and went down and scored.

It's an unfair advantage for a team to know they have four downs to make a first rather than three downs. At least in my mind.

Agreed...and my point exactly. I think the current system is as good as it is going to get (with the exception of replacing the coin-toss as mentioned in an earlier post).

How I see it is that the NFL has overthought the OT rules. In the NBA you get 1 more quarter. In MLB you get 1 more inning. I think simply having 1 more of whatever unit your game already is divided into (quarters, innings) is the way to go. It is both simple and uncomplicated.

Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct answer.

Is it more unfair than having to play consecutive series on defense?

It’s the coin toss that complicates it. Otherwise, agreed 100%.

Make it simple like MLB and give home team the advantage: bottom inning / first possession so higher chance of having an extra possession over opponent.

I like the idea of making home field advantage a tangible thing.

I would say going into a drive knowing you have four downs to get a first down is more advantageous than playing against a defense two series’ in a row but I don’t really think there is a tangible way to compare the two scenarios.

Oh wow, guys... I didn't expect my little OT rant to keep going like this. My bad. I do like playing for one more quarter. That probably the most simple way. The best part is the game never changes. It's still about defense and offense

No apologies required! I always enjoy a good OT debate!! Right up there with the discussion to move the PAT line back (which I still think is great despite it seeming to work against the teams I am rooting for more often than not).
