That’s the thing that I don’t really know what the solution is. You hear all the time when you get your guy don’t let him leave the building. I think Daboll was the hottest candidate after his last game, what were the Giants supposed to do to not risk losing him?

If you want to tank the coach has to be on board, either that or you do it the hard(er) way in which you give your coach such a dumpster fire of a roster that no matter how good he is he simply can't win games.

There will always be situations where teams have a preferred candidate and they will interview the minority candidate that everyone else is. Once they hired their GM, it almost felt certain that it would be either Daboll or Fraizer. And if Giants didn't hire him, Miami surely would have. Especially since he wants to retain Patrick Graham and okay with Jones, he probably would have retained Miami's defensive staff and be okay with Tua.

The intent is good, but execution is hard when a team isn't going into the search with a clear open mind.

You can have your guy, but you still have to go through the process. Telling people you've got him and then going through the charade of other interviews is clearly not proper and will warrant at least the $500k fine most recently outlined for violations.

              NFL statement

They should at least try to investigate it first before quickly saying it's without merit

I absolutely love that he outed the team for telling him to lose. We needed a coach to actually come out and say that for the sake of posterity. Maybe that will quiet the "football teams aren't trying to lose, bro," crowd lol.

The team didn't try to lose. The owner wanted to. I think when people respond with your quote, they're talking about the players and coaches, not the front office

I expect we'll get more nuance to the denial later, Broncos coming w/ receipts though (as required since 2018 changes to the Rooney rule to ensure documentation about interviews is retained):

He claims this was an instance of being interviewed to fulfill the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to consider ethnically diverse candidates for jobs.

"The Broncos' then-General Manager, John Elway, President, and Chief Executive Officer Joe Ellis and others, showed up an hour late to the interview," the lawsuit alleges. "They looked completely disheveled, and it was obvious that they had [been] drinking heavily the night before."

That has to be frustrating, going to these interviews all pumped up, then realizing in
the process these guys had no intention of hiring you.

In terms of winning in an actual court battle, it doesn't have much merit.

But I don't think the goal is to win in court. The goal is negative press to prompt change. For that goal it has a plenty of merit. This is one of those lawsuits where the goal is to settle. And Flores isn't asking for money but new policies and programs to support diversity. The NFL will settle this lawsuit and pat themselves on the back for enacting programs.

I was editing the Merit part out. Beat me to it. Yes maybe it goes no where
but it definitely shines the light on how bad the process is.

Oh it will go exactly where its planned to go. That plantation quote in the headlines? It already is.

Sure. But how many times has an owner wanted it to happen and the coach agreed to make it happen? It's crazy to think that this would be an isolated incident. This stuff just doesn't make it out in the open like this.

Looking like Harbaugh to Vikings based on reports. Making sense because him interviewing National signing day is a clear sign he's interested
