New contract for Cards’ QB Kyler Murray that will keep him under contract with the team through the 2028 season.

Per Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $230.5 Mil with $160 Mil guaranteed and will have the 2nd highest AAV of a QB Contract at $46.1 Mil per year.

                        2022 Offseason Thread

Speaking of dumb Kyler Murray contract things - per multiple NFL media people on Twitter, the Cardinals did insert a clause into the contract which mandates that Kyler spend at least four hours a week during the season doing “independent study” of game tape. If he does not provably do this, the Cardinals can void the guaranteed money in his contract.

Recall that Kyler said in an interview last season that he did not ever feel the need to study tape and that he thought his talent would carry him through games.

It is remarkable that he has made it this far in the modern NFL as a QB1 without studying film, if that statement was true. This isn’t the 1990s when Brett Favre could win multiple MVP awards while not even knowing what a nickel back is lol.

It's sad that they even paid him that much money when he isn't putting in the effort needed to be a top QB.

It's just part of today's NFL were players are fine as along as they get paid, winning is meaningless for most of them. Sure they like the addition things that come from winning but not enough to put the work in.

I like it lol, I know it sounds weird, but they're basically saying "we would love for you to be our long term guy, but please watch tape, if you just study a bit, you could be so much better, you could be crazy awesome if you study film, just give it 4 hours a week"

idunno how you prove someone is actually studying or not, but it's a fun way of putting faith in a guy while saying "but..."

I missed this! I take this to mean film study on his own time, because I’m sure they’re going over film in the QB room. Makes it sounds less crazy that way — still putting in work, just not extra work, heh. It does look bad paired with the second half struggles the Cards have had over the last 2 seasons. I’m sure if they put together a complete year everyone will say the clause is genius but it won’t be as easy as saying it was one thing and that’s it.

It would seem wise for Murray anyway. He won’t always be as fast, strong, etc as he is right now. That’s when those extra mental reps can make the difference. Plus just more experience seeing how defenses play him. I feel like there’s still another level to unlock for him. That’s an exciting thought considering he’s been really good to begin his career. Year 4 incoming. I would put money on him taking a leap.

Yeah, I think it just seems weird/odd because we see a team put a clause like this in someone’s contract.

But if we didn’t know this, we probably wouldn’t even have an issue with it because let’s be real…do we honestly believe that these guys are in their playbooks 24/7 from September to February? Of course not. I just think he said the what a lot of players probably do but don’t want to say it publicly.

I remember when Vick basically said the same thing in that he didn’t watch film and used to toss those DVDs to the side in his case and he would still go out there and have Defenses shook every Sunday.
