    Re: Week 1 Discussion Thread

Minshew looks at least as good as Carr, so maybe he's good enough with all this talent around him and on defense for the Raiders to be decent this season. The fumble off of the botched RPO quick pass was a dumb fluke, and the late game INT was understandable given the rushed nature of the drive.

They were already extremely rare but at least they were possible. Now they aren't even legal.
They should add meaning to how far a guy kicks it if they do want to keep the kickoff.

Kicking it through the uprights means the team starts at the X yard line. Kicking it past the end zone but missing the uprights means teams start at the Y yard line. Kicking it to the end zone (whether it drops in or the returner just takes a knee in the endzone) has the team start at the Z yard line.

Or the returner plays the kick.

So you have 4 possible scenarios with every kickoff. Let's say upright kick is 25 yard line, end zone/touchback is 30 yard line, missing the endzone and uprights fully is 35 yard line.

No good Coordinator is going to Carolina. They're going to be picking from the scrap heap forever with Tepper. Just hope you find a guy that excels given a chance that no one else would. If Canales isn't him, it's on to the next

Montgomery said I'm gonna bulldoze everyone and get out of here with a win. That was some pure strength on that last drive.

If they want fans to be excited, they'd just revert all the the stupid rules and admit they're all failures. All the kick rules, all the OT rules (just ****ing play an extra 10 minutes and whoever is winning at the end wins), all the penalty/hit rules and overregulations that lead to constant interpretation by refs, hesitation and bad performance by players, ruined game variance, etc.

Just....revert. Enough is enough with this cheesy crap. The sport was perfectly fine. Every sport manufactured bull**** problems out of thin air, provided "fixes" and in the process actually made **** stupid. Some of us warned about slippery slopes.

Brady sounded like he was holding back. Remember he's been restricted from doing what usual commentators are allowed to do. I think people wanted him to jump out of the gate with comments at the line of what he sees, like Romo x10, he's gonna be generic, they have to get the annoying crap out of the way first. KB and EA had to get their things in (both of which were annoying, but they probly had no choice)

He did harp on the Browns 3rd and long stuff endlessly, but he's a work in progress, he'll settle in

Some of us lol. The slippery slope is a real thing.
Give them an inch. They'll take it a mile. The kick return stuff is absolutely hilarious to watch. It looks so stupid. I laugh every time I see it.

I just wish they'd make a definitive ruling on roughing the passer. That rule kills alot of enjoyment for me. It's never called fairly.

In general there are still too many flags. Any time I look up and see a big play through the air or on the ground I'm nervous it's a Flag. That's not good NFL.

JMO looked like a real weapon for Detroit last night. I could see him develop into a strong WR2 for them. That's alot of speed to pair with Amon Ra. Really good game last night. Hopefully Nacua is ok.

Basketball and baseball have excellent overtime setups but both college and pro football overtimes are crap. In my opinion, by the very nature of the sport there just isn't a good way to play overtime. I wouldn't be opposed to having a 5th quarter pick up play starting off just like when the 3rd quarter changes over to the 4th or the 1st quarter to the 2nd. Then play a full 8 minutes, no ''sudden death''.

Yeah, there's no great answer. I don't want QBs ending up with 7 TDs because a game goes to 3 OT and defenses can't stop anything in the red zone, a la the college rules.

I like your 5th period/quarter idea. You'd have some crazy situations where teams are weighing whether to gun it down the field on the last drive of the 4th quarter in a tie game to win it, or let the clock run out and let things play out in the 5th. The key is not having a coin toss and kickoff, because that takes away the arguments about teams each getting a possession, etc.

I think the best solution is just figuring out how to avoid OT altogether lol. Maybe adopt the (former) XFL rules on extra points, where you can score between 1-3 points based on where you line up during the conversion. Anything to mix up the point totals a little. But I'm sure the analytics will say to always go for 1, and teams would all fall in line like they do with the new kickoff rules.

I thought Brady and Mahomes killed the curse once and for all. It didn't take but for last year to revive it. If I was a current player, I don't think I would want to risk it. Having only retired all-time greats on the cover would be the way to go. I would love a Walter Payton or Joe Namath Madden cover.
