Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
My worry is that Denver is changing as an organization. The mentality used to be that they would do whatever it takes, damn the costs, to try and win. That mentality isn't there anymore. I'd hate to think that the Broncos are becoming a cheap organization that is more concerned with the almighty dollar than they are with winning.
Maybe being cost conscious is going to help them. Shanny would enter free agency and overspend, maxing out the cap to the point where they were helpless. I believe they were considerably under the cap last year. Denver used to be one of the most active teams in free agency. I'm glad they are trending away from that, but I hope it's not for the wrong reason. I am hoping that they are going to begin to invest in their own and build through the draft, and Bowlen isn't simply trying to save money.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
I don't want to go there quite yet. This new regime got started during a season with no off-season at all. That's tough. I personally like the idea of building from the draft. It's how I run my Madden franchises too. Free agency has bit us so many times in the past with these veterans who come in, getting paid big bucks, only to do nothing at all.
And yeah, you're dead-on with Shanny and his free agency. I look at a team like the Blackhawks, who won a Stanley Cup, then promptly had to let go of key players because they couldn't pay 'em! I think your intuition is correct: if we build through the draft, we're going to need some cap space in the near future to re-sign these guys beyond their rookie contracts. Then we're going to be left with a solid core of players who can form chemistry for years.
Man, I miss the combo of Williams/Wilson/Gold for our linebackers (and John Mobley).Comment

...and Moreno gets picked up for a DUI. Time to cut him and move one from this mistake."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

How stupid is it to get a DUI will driving a car with plates that read "SAUCED"?Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
I've recently compared Moreno to Reggie Bush. They both struggled mightily with the same issues. Neither seems to have very good vision out of the backfield. Once you get them into open space, look out. But both have issues with seeing holes and hitting that hole.
That being said, Moreno could've been a solid running back. He had over 900 yards his rookie season, and he's averaged over 4 ypc for his career. Moreno just can't stay healthy. This kid is injury-prone, and messing up your legs repeatedly is pretty damaging to a running back. Whether that's a reflection of his own training laziness, Rich Tuten, or just sheer bad luck, who knows. But as a running back who relies on speed and quickness, if you're constantly nursing pulled hamstrings, you're doomed. Then you compare it to Willis McGahee, who played with a broken hand and a bunch of injuries and kept on moving the ball forward.
I'm not going to dog on the kid for getting a DUI, I've done stupid stuff in my life too. I do hope he learns from this experience. I think he'll find himself cut during camp or preseason, though, simply due to a lack of production. When you come in as a former first round pick, and guys like Lance Ball are better all-around running backs, you won't last.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
It's not so much the DUI that bothers me. We all make mistakes. It's when you take it into consideration with his performance since he was drafted. Fair or not...he just hasn't worked out for Denver.
Isn't 2012 the last year of his contract? I honestly don't know if he will be around or not. Most running backs are effective almost immediately when coming into the league. They have a short lifespans. Moreno's window may have closed. I know... he's got fresh legs still... I just haven't seen anything in the form of consistency that makes me believe he's going to be what he was drafted to be.
I am hoping they get another back in the draft, in which case letting Moreno go for whatever reason wouldn't bother me.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
This will be his last year, and I think he's going to make around $1 million. So cutting him wouldn't be that big of a hit. Yeah, the kid hasn't worked out. Running back might be a serious issue for us. To expect McGahee to repeat what he did might be a stretch, and he's going to need support. Lance Ball isn't the kind of back you give the ball to 25-30 times consistently. We need someone who McGahee can compliment. If our running game dries up, we're in trouble.Comment

I liked reading what Woody had to say about Tebow and EFX in his mailbag.

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
Yep. You are right...he doesn't have to be a 4000+ yard guy, but that completion percentage has to come up. He has to be a threat thowing the ball. Its the only way the 'other' stuff will work. I think about all the threats he could impose....it would make things SO hard on a defense. He could bring so much to the Broncos.
I think we are going to have a real good idea as soon as camp opens. It will be highy talked about how much he has improved even after the first practice of camp. We may even hear things coming out of OTA's. If camp opens and he looks like he did last year (highly unlikely - lockout, blah, blah, blah), I'm going to lose a lot of hope.
I don't know if Tebow can be 'fixed' as easily as some of these guys think, but I want to hear that he is working with somebody. There are too many restrictions in the new CBA that limit the time he can actually spend with the Broncos staff. Therefore, its imperative that he works at this on his own time. I don't think time with just the Broncos is going to be enough. I believe he will improve, but to what level? He says nobody will work harder than him...okay...let's see it.
I hope what Woody says is true, but I can't say I'm holding my breath.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
Yeah, I don't really think Tebow needs "fixing." Forget fixing his mechanics. His mechanics don't mean a thing, really. His release point is decent, and that's what can make the difference between a deflection and a completion. Philip Rivers has some wonky throwing motion, too.
It's about anticipation. That's what really matters. If he can learn to read defenses and throw over the middle with touch, he'll be fine. Accuracy comes with confidence. When he's confident of a throw, he'll be more on-target. Hesitation/indecision makes people inaccurate. So I'm not that worried about that stuff. People talk about his sub-50% completions, and I think that comes from two things: not wanting to mess up, and not feeling confident in his throws.
That's what makes Tom Brady what he is. It's not that Tom Brady has these amazing physical skills. It's that, before the snap, he knows exactly what he wants to do and where he's going with the ball. As Trent Dilfer said, Brady isn't very good when the play breaks down. When he isn't sure, when the defense goes zone when Brady thinks it's man coverage, he throws picks. His post-snap reads are average. But when things go as he thinks they will (which is often), he's deadly. That's what McDaniels tried to do here. It's why he was adamant about Orton getting to the line with plenty of time to make adjustments and get his reads. This is actually how I play Madden. If my pre-snap reads are right, I will fire the ball with deadly precision. When the defense throws me a wrench, I get a bit screwed up.Last edited by Broncos86; 02-12-2012, 12:46 AM.Comment
