Yeah, give him the rest of the year and see what happens. Can't get much worse.

I have my doubts.
      That would be nice.

I don't have anything against him. I hope he succeeds.

But I'd prefer long-term that they get a big name, especially one who is more offense-oriented. Then again, when the 49ers last advertised for a coach, there weren't too many takers.

I can't remember the last time a coach was given more than an interim contract without being previously a head coach in college or pro and at least a coordinator.

But who knows, maybe Singletary will get the players to perform better.

The fundamental problem though is the personnel. We're still hurting from Donahue's poor drafts and Nolan hasn't done much better, not to mention give out a lot of contracts to journeymen players.

A new coach, with personnel powers, is more likely to turn over the roster quickly. I believe Parcells has done that several times in his career, where he goes on a bad team and turns over something like 1/3 of the roster.

It would probably be easier for a coach/GM who doesn't have ties to the current regime or roster to take such an action than one promoted internally.

Well there is no way a team hires a head coach mid-season, normally they let someone step in as an interim and see how he does and then address it in the offseason. I heard the Niners were in contract discussions with Singletary, what was that about exactly? Did we hire him for more then just the remainder of the season or did we give him a raise to step in for the remainder of the year and then we would see how it worked out and look into possibly hiring him fulltime in the offseason?

I dont think we need a offensive minded coach as long as we have Martz because those egos wouldnt work out, they would clash constantly. I dont think we need a head coach who is more efficient in any specific area, I think we need a good motivator, a guy who is a natural born leader and can teach the younger players and I wouldnt mind him being popular with players around the league as it may help with free agency signings. Does anyone wonder if we are going to go down the Dennis Green road in the offseason again? I remember back when Nolan got the job they were flirting with Green/Holmgren/Carroll and then they hired Nolan out of nowhere. Are they going to make a play on Holmgren in the offseason if Singletary doesnt work out? Im really curious to see what happens, Im not a huge fan of Homgren but he is a big name that could help with bringing in players through free agency.

In terms of bad contracts, the one that sticks out to me the most is Nate Clements and his enormous deal, imo, you build your defense from the defensive line to the linebackers and then to the secondary. If you have a defensive line full of studs then you can get by with an average secondary but if you cant get pressure then it wont matter who is in your secondary as they cant cover forever. We need to make a hard run at any edge rushers this offseason, try and land a big time, playmaking WR and draft a QB for the future as Alex Smith is clearly not the answer. I think if we do this then we will be on the right track.

Re: Official San Francisco 49ers thread

It seems Singletary's strengths would be as a motivator but his weakness would be in Xs and Os since he's not been a coordinator.

If we keep Singletary after the season, we're basically keeping a lot of Nolan's regime around.

I hope he's successful the rest of the season but I don't know about keeping him long-term.

Former 49er Eric Davis wrote a column on 49ers.com about the importance of technique, suggesting that the coaching staff has failed to teach the players good technique:

The 49ers are a 2-5 team because of the little things - not the big ones. Most of the problems they are experiencing can be fixed with technique and focus. Every player and coach on the 49ers will say that it is technique and not talent to blame for the losses. What I know for certain is that when two highly trained NFL players compete against each other, the player with the best TECHNIQUE, not the most talent, usually wins. There is such a slight difference in good and bad technique that most fans would never notice. But, let me explain it this way. The only difference between boiling water and hot water is one degree. Steam can move a locomotive, but one degree less and all you have is hot water. Right now, the 49ers are all in hot water.

How has Kentwan Balmer performed for you guys? He's a local product so I'm curious.

Tough way to lose against Arizona. I mean giving the ball to Michael Robinson with 4 sec left. Gore is our stud on the team, he should have had the ball in the end. I was also thinking Singletary/Martz were going to run a playaction since ARI was expecting the run.

Is anybody watching the game against St. Louis today?

Just went up 35-3 with 34 seconds left in the first half.

                    Holy crap...

I know it's the Rams, but geez...

I watched it and it was nice since we hadnt won a game in nearly 2 months but it was the Rams after all so Im not getting to amped. We do still have games with Miami, St Louis and Seattle so there is a chance we could somehow sqeak out a 7-9 record but its going to be really tough at this point.

Rams w/o Jackson at that (not to rub any salt in the 9ers fan wounds), but I'd like to see Singletary get a fair shot and they'll need to win a few for that, no matter who the wins are against. You do know the Dolphins are 6-4 and in the thick of the playoff hunt, right? And Seattle has Hassleback and Branch back now. None of those games are gimmies, assuming Jackson is back for the next Ram game.

Dolphins are just as prone to play down to their competition as anyone so Im not worried there. The Rams need more then Jackson, Bulger is terrible and I think we can win that game still. Seattle having Branch and Engram back is nice, not to mention Hasselbeck, but I dont think that teams any good either way so Im not completely concerned there either. In the end, if the Niners can avoid constant mistakes and turnovers that plagued them earlier this year then we should be in decent shape.

EDIT- Dont forget that those same Dolphins nearly lost to the Raiders today, lost to Houston, barely beat Seattle, they arent the most consistent team either.

No offense (to you or any 9er fans) but all the "potential" issues with all those teams are pretty much on par with those of the 9ers. In the dolphins case, they're 6-4 so they've had less issues. Just seems strange that you'd phrase it as "I'm not worried there" or "not completely concerned there". There's no reason you should expect them to lose any of those games but I'd think you should be worried about every game the way the 9ers are playing. Hell I'm worried about every game of my up and down team and I'd say we've looked a bit better than the 9ers so far this year.

Good luck to you though. I really do hope Singletary can prove his style is effective in the NFL.

Who's coaching the team on protecting the ball?

                                5 fumbles.

And now Hill throws the pick anyways.
