Re: Official San Francisco 49ers thread

If Smith doesn't start or doesn't show signs that he could be an all-pro some day, they will have to draft a QB next year. Not necessarily in the first round but start grooming someone else who could be a future QB. They don't have anyone like that on the roster in case Smith never turns it around.

They can't wait around forever for Smith.

Imagine wasting key years of Gore and Davis' careers because they don't have a competent QB, regardless of any extenuating circumstances.

Mark Purdy of the SJ Mercury wrote a few weeks back that if the 49ers can't win at least 4 of their first 8 or 9 games, Nolan has to go.

Well, their first 8 games include games against NE, the Giants and the two Seattle games.

I think he should get the job. This is pretty much his last chance so let him try to prove he can somewhat live up to his potential. I really do wonder what would happen with Smith if he had an OC for longer than one season. I think a big part of the reason his development has stalled is that he keeps learning a new system every year.

The "competition" is ridiculous. How is this offense supposed to get in-sync with three different quarterbacks taking reps with the starters? To me that isn't something that's going to be successful. I'm not saying just give Smith the job, but I just don't think what they're doing now with the QB's is going to translate to a successful offense. I think the offense has enough weapons to be decent or even good, but the lack of chemistry with a QB is going to hold them back.

Depending on what happens this year and who's the head coach next year, I wouldnt mind seeing us trade for Brady Quinn in the off-season if Smith does poorly and Anderson proves that he's not a one year fluke. Thoughts?

I wouldnt mind it but it depends on what the Browns would want, and personally if Im the Browns I dont trade Quinn, I trade Anderson while he has value and go with Quinn, it worked for San Diego when they let Brees go so its been done recently. Again though, I think Anderson isnt much more then a fluke and had a career year last year so take that into account when reading my reply.

So what Niner fans don't actually get to watch the game? Living in Texas and having directv since 99 I always caught the games, until last year when I got rid of Directv. I miss it dearly since I can't watch the 49ers, just wondering if any other fans post here that feel my pain.

I probably won't be able to see games either once I go back to socal. From what I saw tonight though, I may not be missing much.

Our QB's play tonight was horrible. Starting with JT. The pick that he threw simply showed why he SHOULDN'T be given another shot. He made another mistake pretty quickly fumbling the ball scrambling. Small sample size, but this guy doesn't have the qualities of a starting QB in the NFL.

Alex Smith was probably the "best" of the bunch, leading the team to 3pts. He did look uncomfortable, and I don't think he's made for the Martz offense.

Shaun Hill was given the most opportunites, atleast with throwing the ball. Again, I don't think this guy fits the Martz offense. Showed a lack of arm strength, and was picked.

The one positive from the game was Josh Morgan. The guy looked impressive out there and showed the ability to catch in traffic

Didnt see it here either, but if you have NFL Network they are showing it again tomorrow night at 10:00 PM so you can watch it then if you want. Im probably not going to watch it, its pre-season so I cant get into it much and I have a real problem with watching sporting events after they have already been completed, for some reason it really bothers me.

EDIT- I should clarify, when saying tomorrow Im talking about Saturday.

I missed it too because of football practice.

I heard the offense wasn't very good.

Anybody who saw the game, could you please give me better details? It'd be greatly appreciated.

I'll be catching the replay on NFL Network.

The QB's didn't look too good at all. JT and Hill each threw a pick, and JT also fumbled. Smith wasn't too impressive but didn't make mistakes, he was 5/9 I believe.

Josh Morgan had by far the most impressive showing on the Niners... I'm hearing he's having a great training camp as well, so it's looking bright for him. Made some nice catches in the middle of the field, had 60+ receiving yards and 3 or 4 catches.

JT is leading the QB battle. The fact that he was a backup for Martz back in Detroit is playing a roll here. If we go into the season with him, we're aiming for the #1 pick. It's going to be a disaster, with very little upside.

How was Shaun Hill acquired? Did we draft him some year after we drafted Smith?

Aaron Rodgers is just now getting playing time. But Green Bay drafted Brian Brohm in the second round just in case.

The point is, has Nolan made a contingency in case Smith is a total bust?

Outside of Smith, we don't have a long-term option at QB and if Smith fails, there's nothing but journeymen.

This is what I wanted to ask Niner fans about. Is Mike Martz actually serious about starting J.T. O'Sullivan over there? I really thought it was a far-fetched rumor when I first read about this news.

Their very serious about JTO starting he's getting all the first team reps. I dont think Hill is even in consideration to start anymore.
