Shooting was terrible, just terrible. I took a forehand wrist shot from the blue line and the puck essentially slid at a snail's pace all the way to the goalie. Do players in the NHL have noodle arms now? Shooting felt laggy too BTW...It felt as though there was a delayed reaction to my flicking the analog stick and then seeing my player shoot the puck.

Passing was your typical passing in an EA hockey game. Not great. Inaccurate and weak passes were all over the place. Worse than that though was the puck control...or lack there of. So many pucks would simply bounce off their target. It was shameful honestly. I mean EA does realize that even though you're not playing with Ovechkin, technically your avatar in an NHL player and pretty much ALL pro hockey players can take a pass...right??

I'm not saying that it was terrible, but I felt that the controls were sluggish and slow to respond. I'll play a few more games and see how I really feel about this. Right now, I'm somewhat underwhelmed.
The fact that every pass doesn't magnetize to your stick is actually a good thing. For far too long the player would magically receive any pass that was in the vicinity. Regardless of positioning or what side of the body the pass went to. I hear ya about "NHL players skill etc", but not every pass should be tape-to-tape, nor is every pass completed automatically, as it's been in most every previous version of EA NHL. This to me is one of my favorite nuances of 16'.

At first I agree the movement seemed delayed but it feels more fluid after a few games. I also find this to he a good thing. It makes things less arcade like. You can't just fly around full speed turning and stopping on a dime just to get back up to full speed instantly. Makes you play positions; makes you have to think about your movement to keep you in position.

I haven't noticed any issues with shooting. Again, it feels less automatic and more about feel. About your situation around you, taking into account you can't get an insanely hard AND accurate shot regardless of your position with the puck /defenders around you etc.

Sure there'll still be glitches and exploits here and there. But so far (especially evening out player attributes) I feel like you're really rewarded for playing smart hockey.

Re: Your Thoughts on the EASHL Beta

Played a few more games last night. I was waiting to post impressions until I thought I had played enough.

I like it. Like Fiddy mentioned about himself above, I too am also a passer, I like to play Adam Oates-ish. But I had a hard time with the timing of how passes released. Last night seemed better for some reason. Probably just got used to it. But I still feel the release of the pass from when you press RT to off the stick should be looked into.

As far as accuracy goes. I like that everything is not tape to tape but I made some passes yesterday that were outrageous, going point to point one pass went back to my own goalie....BUt, that is my fault with the aiming. Just need to get used to it and be more careful

We had some great games last night, actually won two. Goal variety was great slap shots, wristers, deflections, one timers, garbage, really had every type. That it was great.

I feel like every game I enter, win or lose, the team that won played better hockey. Wasn't that game where you bump into the college kid that has played 32843 games and is a level 98 and with work, coaching, life etc, I was proud to get to 102 games and a mere level 63. I play better hockey with my controller but his beefcake tears it up. I do think this will make this mode more accessible to people that just don't have time to level up, me being one.

One last, I hope EA adds a status on the "GAME IN PROGRESS". I've sat in the dressing room waiting for about as much time as I have actually played. At least with my One I can snap tv, but it would be nice to know that there is 19:21 left in the first period so I could go do something and come back.

I do like the builds. I know it will get 2 of my buddies back. Hopefully the replayability is there though. Either way, I feel like the beta is going in the right direction. On an aside, the OS guys I have played with have been great guys. Really enjoyed gaming with them all.

It's the only game where a Boston and Habs can play together and have a good time. I always have a stream up when I play Shogun. So if you want to know where we are at, you can look us up on Twitch.

I gave up on the beta. Takes way too long to get into a game. Then the input delay kills your ability to do anything consistently. Bummer!

CPU DEF will skate behind your own net and get trapped for no reason - yet again like in previous versions.

It's nice to have club back. I have lost all confidence in EA as a studio. I think this game will be same old, same old. Without competition in this genre it's going to be the same stuff year after year. Same commentary, same terrible CPU ai, same slow menus which are difficult to find what you're looking for stat wise.

If they just took NHL 09 and fixed the CPU they would only need to do roster updates. Who cares about beards, upgraded fighting engines, or realistic puck physics that will never be realistic.

            Fix the damn game already.
No offence to this poster, but posts like this frustrate me.

The game is NOT SUPPOSED to work the way you want every time you play. Sometimes, your stick lift will not work. Sometimes, you'll miss! Sometimes, you'll take a high stick! And your poke check *is* supposed to work; if you checked replays in the past, it didn't because pucks were literally going through sticks. As for bad goals, you know that happens in hockey, right? Tommy Salo once gave up an elimination goal from centre ice off his head in an actual hockey game, in the OLYMPICS; **** happens.

Here's a news flash: as an actual game of hockey, NHL '09 sucked. NHL '14 sucked. Even NHL '16 will suck once the cheesers figure it out. I'm sure you won all your NHL '09 games 6-2, but it sucked. It's time to move on. If that's too hard, then there's an entire community of people still editing NHL 2004 on the PC. Hope you have better luck than I did, I can't even get it to work with my graphics card.

Another thing is with tho game. The icons look like Google map pins. They are F***ing huge!!!! Why do they have to be huge like that. There was nothing wrong with the Sims icons they had the past few years. If it isn't broken, don't fix it!

No offense taken. I understand what you're saying - variance is reality, games cannot be perfect, stuff happens.

I think what I was really hopeful for was more progress. The game seems relatively unchanged from previous iterations. I have played 20 games in the beta, which may or may not be a big enough sample size, I don't know. What I do know is that stuff I have been pissed off about in this game for years is still there. It shocks me that some of this stuff hasn't been addressed. Who knows, maybe it's impossible to code it into a game, I'm not in the industry so I don't know. It would seem to me that as a development team who has worked on this game for 10+ years in the xbox360/ps3/ps4/xbox1 era that some critical gameplay dynamics would be nailed down by now.

I just read a review by an editor on the front page - same gripes we have all spoken about for years. Why can't the CPU ai be programmed properly? Is there really a reason for bone-headed plays 90% of the time?

Look, I know that there is an easy response to anyone who is critical about the game - "don't buy it then". The point is, this is a beta where feedback could be critical. My previous post you responded to was honest feedback.

It needs to be better. They are charging 80$ in Canada for a game, what have they done to earn my 80$? Would they push themselves harder if 2k still made a hockey game? Will they release consistent player updates? Are we all to expect the usual 3-4 updates per year? If that?

Constructively giving feedback, even if negative, should not be frowned upon. Also, this is a video game, I don't want it to reflect real life 100% of the time, I want it to be fun, I don't want to watch the CPU goalie make hall-of-fame like saves for 2 periods then to watch him let in 3 awful goals for no reason. ETC.

I know we can turn it off. I just prefer it to how they had it in 15. That didn't really need change.

that is true. cannot argue that. it should have been left alone.
but it is nice to know that we dont have to have the icons on. that eliminates the need to bi tch and moan about it.

I have been playing bunch of games with OS EAST. I have to say that I kinda like this game. Challenging and fun. No more human goalies sitting on a goal line on butterfly, no more dangle fests. AI is improved indeed but behind our own net they are just completely lost. Playing as a goalie the hug the post needs a fix as soon as possible. Other than that I think it is too early to say anything else.

                        Just my 2 cents

I agree with you and I think at first everyone is going to think some of the things you responded too... but the more you play and learn you realize most of the criticism about things.. especially the passing and hitting adds more realism and teamwork and skill. at least for me that's what I have noticed. I like most others thought the skating and passing was sluggish. but now I feel find skating and passing but still learning as well... I'm by no means good at it yet but I don't feel dumb about it or think the passing is horrible like others do. I really think EA changed the way you have to play and the controls are basically not pick up and play anymore.. it takes time to learn it even if you have been playing NHL since the new control scheme came into place in 08...

it basically feels like to me that you are playing hardcore simulation mode by default now which is a good thing... the majority of people are going to want EA to change it back to the other way I think I'm afraid but I actually think this is way is better for the EASHL as it takes a lot more skill now than before to be good at things I think.. just my opinion

yes.. this is so annoying why they can't add that. I hope they do and also allow you to view the game like normal from penalty box view. I hate not seeing every thing in the box... haha

ps. I would recommend at least 10 games or so before you start judging as it takes awhile to get use to it imo ..

and besides I heard complaints that the computer AI goalie is too good... which is it?

this is meant for 6 v 6 hockey... humans.. I actually prefer the computer AI to be bad in this mode. anything that helps out people who play 2 or 3 mans clubs is MAJOR negative in this mode and kills the game.

I don't notice the computer AI being that horrible when I have played with it.. and if it was any better than it already is I would be complaining.

Re: Your Thoughts on the EASHL Beta

To keep it really simple, is this beta better than NHL 15 on the XB1/PS4? Yes. Is it better than NHL 15 on the 360? Not even close. Thats the major problem. This game has not transitioned well between generations.

Looking at it from a more advanced perspective, there are some big issues that I'm not sure can be resolved before launch or even after with patches.

This game suffers from input lag. If you've played goalie, its REALLY bad. Skater is manageable, but the smooth controls from the last gen are gone. The goalie controls are awful, I don't know what else to say. Three button presses to hug the post makes it really difficult for goalies to move around cleanly. The wrap is the best its ever been thanks to bad controls.

The idea of preset classes is fine, but it hasn't really been implemented well. When I'm playing forward, I can tell a difference defensively between the builds, but offensively, they're all pretty much identical. Even the sniper has bad shot accuracy(most shots don't even come close to the post, so even goalies way out of position are bailed out by the puck being shot more towards the center of the net). Every once in a while you'll see a puck get sniped but its very rare.

The AI is awful but everyone knows that and its been beat to death. This series has always been plagued with bad AI so I can't say I'm hopeful it'll improve before launch.

Looking at the game from a OTP/EASHL perspective, the only reason this is going to be played over NHL 15 on the 360 is that its a new game on a new console, and when it comes out the player base on the old game is going to diminish greatly. Thats unfortunate because a great game is being left behind in favor of a ok game.
