Why does this series never make updates during playoffs?

How hard would it be to make a special playoff mode to mimic real life? I always wondered why this series remains stagnant during playoff time.

Especially this year with the extra rounds.


Online or offline. Like make an online mode where you can play each playoff team series vs someone else online. simple.

they keep missing a great opportunity.

This year they could even have released a special version of the game as "NHL Stanley Cup 2020" with only 24 teams and it would probably have sold. They would only have had to strip down NHL20 and implement the playoff mode.


Just like they do with FIFA World Cup or EURO editions...

I don't think they have time to update NHL20 any longer. I mean NHL 21 is only a month away and I honestly would prefer if they were spending all of their time on that game. Remember, the official NHL season should be done already.

i not just talking about this year but previous years.

My guess is because by the time the playoffs roll around they're heavily invested in next year's edition and don't have time to make updates.

Every year around the Entry Draft they announce if they continue to produce a new Game or not. So they don’t work for a new Game before they have announced it. So it is not logical what you say.

That's not accurate. Pretty much all dev studios do most of the work on their games before announcing them.

By the time the entry draft rolls around they are pretty close to done with development and about to start QA testing.

Sorry, the developer of NHL themselves say other in their Forum when you ask about continue to produce a new Game. They say they didn’t know if they continue this series and there is to wait till they have cleared and announced it. Every year the same process till June. When you ask me .... the most what they do about the Gameplay ..... they moving sliders and add some few animations. That’s it. This year I saw for example that the Player try to stop high Pucks with their gloves. From Gameplay nearly the same as in NHL 20. They didn’t touch the core of the game. What me frustrates more is that they are since years not able to give us new Goalie Masks or creator, more Player likeliness and better options to create more real looking faces, same as to add pictures to all black silhouettes for all real Hockey Players or that you can change the pictures in offline modes.

They say they didn’t know if they continue this series and there is to wait till they have cleared and announced it. Every year the same process till June. They can't confirm the game is being made until the announcement. They are still working on it year-round. My post was still factually correct.

No I am not a developper from this team. I do work in software development but that's besides the point.

All annual sports video games are massive undertakings that are being worked on year round. This is pretty common knowledge.

If this isn't enough for you, you can keep believing that they start working on the new game in late June when they announce it and release a game in early-mid September, ie less than 3 months later. Even with minor changes, there is likely a couple of months just for testing and debugging before release.

And the part about not confirming anything about a new game before it is announced is pretty much standard practice as well. Some projects are worked on for months before being canceled without the public ever knowing they existed. Other times a feature is planned for the next release of an annual game and is worked on for months and has to be pushed back or dropped altogether. That's why employees are generally asked not to reveal anything before an official announcement has been made. It's not an EA or NHL thing, it's just common business practice.
