So far Ive only played one game but I actually really enjoyed it. Lots of organic moments and subtle gameplay improvements make the game feel more dynamic. Really love the atmosphere and energy of the crowd. I played on All Star Simulation and found it a good legit challenge and not too arcade for my liking. Good balance.

Re: NHL 23 Trial Available Now For EA Play Subscribers
After playing a handful of games, some additional observations. Overall, I was satisfied enough to purchase the game. It's not perfect, but good enough for my playing style and enjoyment.
- Changed sliders to what I used last year (i.e. superstar w/tweaks) and penalties were spot on for me, no complaints at all. However, the game felt very easy as I was scoring 9-12 goals myself, which never happened last year. When I first played this game, I lost 2-0 and had low shot totals so it's definitely something with my custom sliders, I'll just need to toughen them up a bit.
- As for presentation, the lack of full presentation does not impact me since I also used the short version anyway as my time is limited. However, not sure why they removed the option when so many other people enjoyed it.
- I haven't seen a lot of the new animations, raising stick to come off ice, pointing to open player, and diving. I actually have only seen pointing to an open player once and none of the others yet. Kind of weird since advertised as major new things, don't really see them.
- The defensemen are taking reasonable shot totals, but from what I can tell most of them (besides my own) are coming when they rush the net or join the play low. Haven't seen a ton from the CPU shooting outside.
- This is probably just me, but I have played on 6 minutes last year and this year. For some reason, playing this year seems slower. It's probably just me, but I thought I was able to complete games faster last year so I might need to take this down a bit.
Overall, I enjoy it enough to buy it, but I didn't have any real expectations of it being different from last year. When I played last year, it was the most fun I have had with an NHL game in a long time. My biggest gripe in the past was lack of penalties, but once I figured that out, I am fine.Comment

Re: NHL 23 Trial Available Now For EA Play Subscribers
I haven't played it yet but have a question for those who have:
On powerplays will the CPU actually sit back a little and let you pass the puck around outside the zone to setup a power play attack or do they do what they've always done and act like there is no power play and go after the puck constantly?
This is one thing that has always bugged me about EA's game versus the old 2K game, on a powerplay the game doesn't play as if the CPU is defending the powerplay at all and they constantly just go after the puck instead of sitting back to defend.
I am hopeful that it's better now but I sort of think this is likely the same as always.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: NHL 23 Trial Available Now For EA Play Subscribers
I'm looking forward to this game...
I played 22 a LOT. and I'm a guy who takes a LOOOOOONG time to create my sliders. I stopped sharing them at OS because I'd change them often, sometimes one tick in either direction at a time. Not worth the misery of complaints here.
But on 22 I've had the most personal realistic games in any hockey game I've played ever. Here's what I've discovered: the game is meant to be played on PRO difficulty level. You then have to do a lot tweaking to get the skating speed right (I give the cpu a HUGE advantage in skating speed). And in order to get the d-men to shoot more you have to up the shot power sliders up. which means you then have to tweak the goalies way up to compensate. I then play tons of games, often ending them and starting over before I finish, because i'm in the slider creation stage. It's amazing how moving a slider 1 tick changes things.
So for that, if 23 is anything like 22 with added features that I'm reading of - yeah, I'm pretty excited. I'll have a solid starting point on my slider set and should speed up the process of enjoying the game. I truly believe that hockey is a hard game to emulate: the hitting, skating, grind vs flow - that has to be difficult to code into a video game replication. I think EA is doing a better job on this when you play with the sliders to create that balance of grit and beauty, toughness and pace.STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS

No, i was wondering this myself. I've seen players pointing out open players to pass to, especially on the PP, but not for a line change.Comment

Not a dealbreaker either but sort of ruins immersion. It couldn't be that difficult, 2K had this back in their hockey game many years ago, the players would act appropriately on the power play and not be constantly rushing the puck.

I disagree. Just played as Edmonton against Calgary on All Star Full Sim with some adjustments and I hemmed Calgary in on the powerplay often and it was intense. They held their box and thwarted my circling powerplay. It was thrilling. I think it has something to do with how you occupy the zone. If you have good fast dynamic puck movement, the cpu is forced to back off.

Playing on the PS5.
With HDR on, the ice looks better than it ever has. You can easily see the cuts in the ice. The player models look better, the glass, etc. Unfortunately, it's noticeably darker. With it off, the game is certainly brighter, but the ice looks like a sheet of paper. You can somewhat make out the ice cuts, but it just looks flat. And the player models don't seem to have as much detail.
Crowd noise and reaction is definitely an improvement. Great to hear the Let's Go Blues chant more than a few times a game. But I sure wish the crowd models were better. Compared to the NBA 2K series, the crowd just looks very last gen. Loses some immersion.
Quick camera cuts have always bothered me with this series. Maybe it's a tad better, but it still sometimes feels too quick compared to a normal broadcast. I'm specifically talking about during stoppages of play, the intros, etc. Just seems it could be smoother.
On the ice, it's a mixed bag. Too often, I'm seeing the CPU forward or center try to skate towards the goal with teammates several yards behind him, while trying to skate through 2 or 3 defenders. Almost feels like he's trying to get called for a shooting foul! lol. In general, the game resembles hockey more than it has in the past, but still feels too spastic for my tastes. I'd love to see more variety, multiple passes while trying to set up a goal, etc.
This game is almost there in my opinion. Sliders will certainly make it more tolerable, but the devs focus was less on gameplay, and more on the subtleties.PSN: sportdan30
