NHL 17 Tribute Video – The best ice hockey game within the last decade?

    Hello guys!

Long time no see. I hope you don't mind me popping up a new thread, but I feel that the effort I put into making this video would justify it.

What is the video about then?

I have tested several older NHL games lately and I must admit that I'm surpirsed that NHL 17 stood up out of the bunch. The only thing that is somewhat better in newer titles is basically the skating. Otherwise, the game feels (I repeat FEELS) the most complete version.

The events during the gameplay seem a lot more random (in a good way, e.g. goal variety, collisions, even injuries), there's a sense of battle in the rink instead of occasional big hits, the puch physics feel better and even the skating – even though lacking in many areas in comparison to newer titles – manages somehow to feel better than in the more recent entries in the series. Everything has "more weight" if it makes any sense. And let's not get into the presentation at all (NHL 17 has TV-like presentation that makes NHL 25 presentation look like a joke).

I have tried to pick up interesting details during the gameplay to show what I mean. I hope you enjoy the video! If you do, remember to like and subscribe.

The songs used in the video are my own production as well. In case you like it, check out also ‪@sir_chimpanzi_music‬ !

    Thank you for your attention!

NHL 20 is the best for me. I have it heavily modified via sliders and global attributes with a completely custom roster, but I just can’t deal with TPS skating. Way too clunky for me. RPM is much more enjoyable for me with my customizations because it allows for much more lateral movement when skating backwards like real NHL defenseman can do.

They definitely need to bring the broadcast presentation back. Now it’s all focused on play and the overlays since 20 are horrible, way too cartoonish. I like it authentic like we see in real life. All other sports games still have realistic overlays and presentation but hockey. It’s just too cartoonish. They don’t even show starting goaltenders either. I don’t get it!

        I agree with this.
NHL 17 is the one that stands out to me as the most playability and randomness of games. I reinstalled it last week and it way better than NHL 2023 ( the last version I played)

I would say in my opinion including all around the game for Franchise mode player, that NHL 25 is the best we ever had. The last decade for me the gameplay seems more or lesser bit the same. What they did this year for Franchise mode player is a big step forward. Hope they will continue this way. Notice that I do not have NHL 24 and play since some years with true broadcast cam.
