Re: 2k VP of Marketing Interview...(Video)

I know that the 'simple, party-time' theme is what 2K is pushing for, but I couldn't agree less with that.

He said it himself, sports games have gotten very serious. And there's a reason for it.
It's for that reason that NFL2K5 was so successful and put a serious dent into Madden's sales.
It's why the NBA2K series has been widely regarded as the best basketball game for over 5 years.
And it's why NHL2K5 took 50% of the market back in the day.

Now, when EA has finally turned around their hockey series, trying to make a serious, and realistic simulation of hockey and destroyed 2K in sales because of it, they want to go the opposite route?
    Really? That's their plan?

But like I said; I know that 2K's developers are going for a realistic, simulation of the game while marketing works on drawing in the simpleton, beer-chugging frat boy.
The problem is, the beer-chugging frat boy probably doesn't have a clue what 2K is. Those kinds of consumers only know name brands. And because 2K's marketing has been as forthcoming as Area 51, I would say they'll lose that battle too.

Come on 2K! Start pumping out REAL information and start touting this game for what it should be, a true simulation of the sport that deserves nothing but respect! Not Party time 2010.

So we agree 2k9 is the best simulation of the sport of hockey :wink:I'm glad EA finally added those little things. It's one of the reasons I'm willing to give their product a serious try this year. I have a feeling 2k will still feel more authentic but EA looks to have made some major strides based on the videos.

Why should you guys get both games the way you want! I like what I am hearing and I love the presentation.
Me too Scott, it doesn't get any better than having a hockey game that is both a true simulation and fun at the same time. It's a brilliant idea on VC part IMHO.

I don't know why some of you guys are all hating on the fact a NHL game on the wii is finally getting attention. We hadn't even had a NHL game until last year (not great but I appreciate 2k for trying, more then what EA did) But I being a Wii owner and a hockey fan am glad that it's matching the 360/PS3 in terms of features. I could see why it needed more attention because it had a lot of catching up to do. I'm not asking for your pity (my choice to by the Wii)... But can't we share a great game ?

You're misunderstanding. Mr. Marketing Guy made it surely sound like the game was primarily driven with the Wii in mind. Interpretation is that the PS3/360 crowd may have to endure whatever short comings that that may bring. Hey if Wii is your thing that's fine. But the primary driver for this series over the past years has been Xbox and PS.

Great post, I agree. Talking up one system doesn't mean the game on the other systems will be flawed. Those who think that are simply those that don't know what they are talking about. The Wii is extremely popular so why not talk up that system when 2k9 sold so well on it last year. I applaud the 2k marketing team, because they obviously know what they are doing. Those who think otherwise, well that's why they are not in marketing and that's my unbiased humble opinion.

Why not try to be critical in your thinking and assimilating information and stop using the 2k embroidered toilet paper all the time. I've preferred the 2K products over EA predominantly, but you gotta see what they're saying and showing.

You mean a negative thinker like your self? No thanks I'm enjoying what I'm seeing. If you want critical thinking let's talk about health care, but since this is about video games, I'm looking for fun and simulation and 2k gives me all that and more. But hey to each his/her own.

Critical thinker is not the same as negative thinker. But then again, I shouldn't expect you to be able to discern the gray. I work with disturbed kids all day and have done so for 20+ years. I can't afford to be a "negative thinker".

I'd be glad to have a PM debate re: health care. I can tell by your postings what "social" circles you hang with.

The problem is that your singing praises and giving accolades and you don't have the game in your hands as of yet. This is what marketing guys love.

So you have a problem with the way I think because I don't think like you? I can help you there it's called WE ARE DIFFERENT. I am a member of the Armed Forces of the United States of America, but I can separate the way I think for the military part of my life and video games. You can't and I understand but it's all good. I enjoy the games, you dissect them. No problem, enjoy.

Now this is funny. I think you have the Negative part down. I think you need to work on the Critical part more.

This is so true. That is the problem. People are always looking at what it does wrong and not enjoying what it does right. I guess that is why we are different than them Eddie.

Yes we are, that's why can enjoy the game more and the little things like the arena atmosphere, etc. get's us so excited. I'm equally excited about picking up madden next week, flaws and all.
