I'm not an expert either, but I feel 2K's rating system overvalues some attributes. A player can have very realistic individual attributes but their overall can look off just because they have good acceleration or a couple of good physical attributes. I go for realistic individual attributes and don't care much about the overall rating, although I try to strike a balance when it's reasonable to do so.

I have noticed that overall is a factor when spectating CPU vs CPU games, but when you are controlling your team individual attributes and how YOU play seem to be more important. An example from my Vegas season:

Called up Stefan Matteau (68 OVR) early. He was invisible. Sent him down, called up Alex Tuch. One of my best two-way players all season, no matter where he played in the lineup, despite being a 69-overall Utility player. Teemu Pulkkinen (70 OVR) always looked like he was about to do something amazing but could not finish his chances. Ended up in the press box. David Perron (75 overall) was a rock offensively and defensively and had better numbers than Reilly Smith (81 OVR).

now, THAT'S interesting and explains a lot. I've had players I'm certain I'm rating correctly or at least within what anyone who knows the player would accept as close and found that my ending overall is a number I don't agree with, so then I've gone and chopped down things like fighting, or other things that could stand to be lower just to see the figure drop to something more reasonable. Cool, good to know.

There's a lot of nuances that make this game infuriating to work with compared to other 2K games.

For example, one of the things that was cool about working with NHL 2K10 on PS2 was that I could hit the shoulder buttons to raise/decrease any value by 10, be it Attributes, Body size, anything.

It's not the case here, and it adds an extra 10-20 minutes to working on skaters.

It wouldn't be as much of a problem if the editor actually worked properly when applying attribute changes but NOPE

It happened again, I reached the Created Skater limit again and then I did the same process of cutting players from international teams and it let me create skaters again, this game is so ******* weird lol

As long as it's actually RECORDING your work though and not overwriting the other guys you made behind your back. I mean, as long as it's acting weird, anything is worth investigating.

Interesting glitch, while working on Arizona's equipment I've discovered their none of their helmets have branding and they're all blank. so it doesn't matter what I choose for them lol (likely globally 1)

I've also discovered that the editor allows you to only name alternate captains for a given team, so it won't force me to give a team a captain when they don't have one (Such is the case for Arizona, Buffalo, Toronto and a few others)

Strange, because at least in the case of Toronto, Sundin was the captain by 2005, I'm pretty sure.

He most definitely was, you can name captains in the editor. but you can also make it so a team doesn't have a captain. is what I'm trying to say.

In my NHL 2K10 PS2 rosters I was forced to give certain teams captains that didn't have them. in the case of ESPN NHL 2K5 I can stay true to real life by using the editor to only give out the alternate captaincies on a given team.

Update: All Historic teams renamed using the option in Finn's editor. also, all of Buffalo's skaters are done, I just have to rate them and choose their equipment.

I've made an adjustment to the 4 finished teams, someone on Discord pointed out that (I think Boston?) one of the teams had a defenseman at LW, so now I've dressed 4 C, 4 LW. 4 RW and 6 D where possible. I will do this for every team going forward.

Here are the new lines of the finished teams:

Side-note: These old logos feel so right.

And yeah some of those old logos are fantastic, except when Buffalo designed that furry slug thing. Just an opinion, I wouldn't waste your time with equipment. I can see a player's appearance being a concern but equipment just isn't vital really as far as I'm concerned.

There's a Discord server for general hockey discussion and I've shown my roster work to them.

The Buffaslug is so bad lol, I wish they would bring back the logo seen in my line image for them. That was their most successful period and they just got a big draft pick. they should rebrand to that.

Equipment is a part of the complete package for me, it can't be totally perfect but as long as the player has their correct stick color and similar looking gloves it helps for the experience, and it only takes a few seconds to google the player for a 2018 image to reference it off of.

I'm just partial to the crest with the buffalo and sabres. If them and the Islanders NEVER changed their logo again I'd be happy. Don't get me started on 'Captain Highliner'.

I totally understand. I respect that dedication. When I make individual players I try to even get their stick tape right. Consequently I'm impressed with the level of editing allowed in 2K5.

You can all test this yourself, but if I recall, NHL 2K5 didn't really seem to recognize the edits via the editor all that well. I would do a test/dummy roster and make 2 teams with extreme differences to see if it really matters.
