    Decompiling and modding NHL2K10 PS3

I am in the process of speaking to some highly experienced C++ and Game developers / coders online about modding NHL2K10. Several sources are going to look at the game files over next few days and let me know what they think. The Playstation game currently seems to be spread across 3x SDAT files each around 1.5gb. Has anyone tried to edit, decompile or pull these part in the past?

I have a small team that has come together to look at finally modding NHL2K10 and unlocking some serious potential for PC hockey again. I know of NHL 2004 rebuilt and love it but would be nice to have more modded hockey games until EA decides to give us PC players a good game again, also on a personal level I'm fed up of not having a hockey game I can easily play with friends and I'm a bit determined to build something myself on PC using NHL2K10. 09 with mods like Elite Rosters gets boring and of course there is 2KHS which I have to say is looking very promising and I am a patreon of this project too... however I feel the more of us playing and modding hockey the better it'll be.

I have a bit of time and funding behind me to get some help onboard a team of small volunteers. I've been playing a lot of 2K10 the last few days messing with sliders and settings. Quite frankily I'm enjoying it more than NHL21.

Would love to hear from people on these forums!

I'll be watching this closely. If the structure is the same as Xbox, this could change the game a bit.

I will equally be paying attention to this. I spent weeks tweaking sliders in 2009 when the game came out. And a couple of years ago when the rosters started showing up more frequently I dug out the same rosters and reworked them again. Despite 2K8 having a fantastic editor, I think 2K10 is the game that is far more captivating so anything that can be done to make it more editable would be fantastic. I know that incredible things are being done to mod even graphically the PS3 version of NCAA14 so I'm hopeful of something similar. You get the audio names lined up with players' real names, the chance to play around with player ratings and game physics, remove portrait faces and if nothing else just a simple way to update rosters and it would change the world of 2K10 roster editing. Now if we added to that the ability to replace graphics... I don't even wanna think what that would do.
Good luck, looking forward to hearing more.

NHL09 on pc for beginners is ok but its not a great overall experience. Modded pc one to hell recently to get some friends into hockey. Good fun over parsec but eventually the AI and the arcade play becomes boring. Fired up NHL 10, 11, 14 and 15 recently and 2k10. 2k10 with sliders is the most fun. For some reason i just couldnt generate accurate or realistic penalty calls in any EA game after 09. Tried sliders and various settings, maybe i need to update games. I will keep you updated on the 2k10 project. No idea yet how feasable my ideas are yet

Right on the same boat as you as far as fed up with EA.

I have 2K10 on the PS3 still because of it. What sliders have you been using? Would love to get some screenshots of your settings to play it on my copy as well.

Will look forward to the potential of modding this game.

I have edited my original post as I've now got a couple of potential parties looking at the game files.

I'll play later today hopefully and post some slider sets for you. I am more of sim hockey guy I like realistic shot numbers and goals where possible and good amount of pens etc. Don't get me wrong I do like NHL 21 but playing with friends is my issue. I try to make my hockey games as hard as possible :-)

Xbox streaming service is trash at the moment I have to stream to my Win10 PC then use Parsec to get me friends in game, half the time its a lag fest. NHL 2K10 + Parsec is great fun.

I have had my slider set I like for about 3 years. And yet, I just spent 30 minutes in practice testing skate speed, ice friction, and acceleration over and over from 0 to 100. I think this is the only part that frustrates me about the game even 10 years later.. that constant search to make the game flow properly. The camera plays a huge part, that's one thing I know for sure.

I personally think the skating engine isn't too bad. I mean at the end of the day it flows better than half the NHL EA Games... the main thing for me is the AI actually cycles the puck, goes behind the net and use dekes and skills. Theres a big noticeable gap in players that are 95 rated and 75 rated. It's nice that the AI actually ends up in the penalty box too.

I just find NHL 17 to NHL 21 generates so many generic games like 1 in 5 games will play out with random events or things that are unexpected. Sliders can do a lot but games like NHL 2004, NHL 2K10 and NHL 10 seem to be better than modern day games.

Don't get me started on NHL 2009 - The PC version is so arcade and generic even with AI settings changed its boring as hell for anyone who plays the game on Superstar or All Star.

I am awaiting conversation with my app dev team guy on where to start and how to approach modding but the responses I am getting are positive.

Well, if we're purely looking at NHL2K10 and the average NHL EA game, then I have to personally disagree with you there. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I personally don't see it that way. I think one thing that is pretty clear to me and a lot of us that have been playing this game for years is that it has fantastic physics, puck movement, and AI, yes absolutely great gane. But unless I'm totally on my own on this, 2K10 is one of the most awful games with respect to flow, the animations of the players on the ice, and the feel of players skating on an ice surface. Threads have been generated for a decade by people trying to make this game look like the players aren't sliding around with thick socks on a marble floor. But regardless of all that, I would love to look at your sliders to see what you have the physics-based sliders at. Maybe you have a good combination that makes the game flow or look better.

I think compared to NHL 21 and possibly 2004 Rebuilt mod its 3rd place in terms of skating but I still think its good... I do think it compares to other games 2010-2015.

When you fire up NHL 2009 on PC and compare to 2K10 just a 1 year newer its a completely different experience. The real issue in creating sports games is one side of the scale you have hardcore sim fans who want realism, proper stats and a game that is a good simulation then on the other hand you had arcade players who just want to play a few hours a week against mates, open a few packs and build an ultimate team. A skating engine is always going to be a dividing topic.

As an update on my 2K10 project we've in a planning phase at the moment my team are writing a roadmap/technical approach plan as to how we are going to mod the game and create tools that the community might be able to use.

I have a specialist looking at file structures and assets to see the best approach to modding. The good news is there is potential to mod NHL2K10... we're not redesigning or changing the game engine. We've set an end objective of being able to edit players with the ability to import & export player pictures, edit team names, update logos and add in jersey graphics. It's probably possible to then edit in game stats and data as a lot of this seems to be built off textfiles, config files and web style pages.

This is a big project that I am personally going to fund a little, I have some funds from others involved but I predict we're going to need a kickstarter/patreon. The good news is a lot of what we want to do is indeed possible. Going to be looking at running some testing in the next few weeks to change and write things to the game. I'm quite excited but until we run actual testing and play with things I won't know what we can do is possible but in theory it is early news is good from my dev(s).

A file structure analysis is being undertaken to see the best route. Be that decompiling the game files making changes and recoding OR whether or not an app can be created to edit SDAT files on a PC. I expect to have some answers to these questions this week

Once the project steps and we know what we can do easily I'll create a site and post here, hopefully with a roadmap. Be patient people this is a big project.
