...glad he's okay though. ****in dirty.
Yeah no idea what he was doing there, no reason to hit Pominville at all.

Hjalmarsson has gotten off to a pretty rough start so far this year, I'd assume that hit was a product of frustration but come on way to put your team in a hole, had to play with 5 d-men the rest of the game and I'm sure he'll be getting a suspension as well (and he should).

    Stupid stupid hit.

Hossa is looking like a beast though, if the D can tighten up and play a little better (which they will) the Hawks will be doing alright, Turco has given up a few softies but the way the D looked those first 2 games I'm not surprised.

Yeah. We've started out with solid offense but terrible D. Last year, surprisingly, it was solid D and terrible finishing.

Hopefully a balance can be reached. The Northeast is up for grabs, in my not-so-educated opinion.

My only question, which Bruins team will we see for most of the season, the team that played on Saturday that showed zero effort? Or the team that played on Sunday that played as though it was game 7 of the SCF?

The hit on Pominville is exactly what the NHL was trying to stop - blind side hits.
If you look at the replay, Pominville takes a quick look to his right. The announcers thought he saw Hjalmarsson when he did that. But if you watch the replay again closely, you'll see that it's Kopecky he spots out of the corner of his eye.
Hammer was completely in his blind spot when the hit occurred.

I want the NHL to throw the book at Hammer and set the standard. That was a dirty hit and it was unecessary.

But with Colleen Campbell running things, who knows what his 'Wheel of Discipline' will turn up. It could be 1 game, 15 games, or a free coupon at Denny's. Nobody knows.

I'm leaning towards no suspension. And if by some reason there is, it's no more than 2 games.

Yeah, blind side, that's the rule they put in place last year, right? They should really set a standard here now that the rule is in place. That was pretty blatant to me, doesn't seem like much wiggle room. It looks like he hit him in the one place where he shouldn't have. He wasn't even face up against the boards like we always see on the boarding calls, he was to the side not trying to put himself in a terrible position.

I say give him 10 games. You've got to make it significant. We can't have players leaving on stretchers at the frequency that we do nowadays.

Avs gets the win @ Detroit, they were down 1-0,3-1 and 4-3 before taking the game to the shootout. Love this young team's no quit mentality.

Hopefully the team that played on Sunday If healthy, this team has the talent to contend...but the effort needs to be better and no more 0 effort games like Saturday.

That Avs-Wings game was fun tonight except the shootout was a display of poor penalty shots until Yip scored. I like the way the Avs play and Duchene is going to be a star.

Two games is an absolute joke! This should have been a minimum 5 game suspension. In my mind, 10 games is what should have happened.

The NHL needs to grow a pair. As soon as they decided to crack down on head-shots and blindside hits they needed to standardize the punishment. First time offense, 5 games. 2nd offense, 10 games, 3rd offense 30 games, etc.
That way they're forced to stick to it.

But there's no rhyme or reason to the level of discipline as it is now.
And you know why? Because the NHL doesn't want a hard standard in case one of their stars does something stupid. They see what a huge star AO is and that he also plays recklessly. So they're scared stiff Ovy might level some guy with a dirty hit and they'd be forced to have their #1 star out for an extended period of time.

The NHL is a complete joke. This 2-game slap on the wrist won't deter anyone from doing it again. Not in the least.

Rules and suspensions don't deter players from these violations anyway. It's like the NHL just wanted to look good after having a really good player in Savard miss a lot of games after the dirty hit by Cooke. They'll talk the talk, but they'll only walk the walk if it's Chris Simon.

The frequency at which these serious concussions and other injuries are coming is alarming, to me. You're going to see former players showing up in the news with serious mental issues due to the concussions, similar to the NFL. Someone is going to be seriously injured (like, for the rest of their life) or flat out die directly related to one of these hits. What will the NHL do then?

Absolutely. In the next 2-3 years someone is going to either a) die or b) become seriously handicapped from a bad hit.

The problem the NHL (and a lot of fans) are having trouble understanding is that there's a huge difference between a 'legal' hit and a 'safe' hit.
This league is no longer filled with 5'8" 160lb forwards. Legal hits 20 years ago didn't result in the same destruction as they do now. That's why the league needs to look at what's safe.

I have to disagree about suspensions though. If you suspended a true NHL player (top 6 forward, top 4 dman) for 10+ games over a dirty hit, it would send a very loud message.

Last year TSN interviewed a few anonymous players and all of them said they aren't deterred from laying out big hits because the league has never suspended a full fledged NHL player for a serious amount of time.
And in today's NHL era where 'The Rat' (ie Hartnell, Cooke, Ott, Downie, Perry, Avery) is prevelant, fighting won't deter it either.
A guy like Avery could baseball swing a guy's head off, get the crap kicked out of him by a goon and do the same thing the next night. Why? Because on-ice justice is a joke too. Just look at Cooke. The dude probably ended Savard's career and what price did he pay? A fight with Shawn Thornton. A fight where he barely got nicked.
According to 'hockey guys' everything's square. Sure, tell Savard that.

What would be true justice is if he got his head kicked-in every shift he played against every tough guy in the league.
Every time he steps on the ice, no matter the team, a goon should destroy him. Why? Because every goon should send the message that his shenanigans will not be tolerated on their stars.
Cooke might play his style for a game or two, but by the third game of getting pummeled he might actually stop his behavior. But that doesn't happen.
So street justice is just as devoid of teeth as the NHL's brand.

They need a guy in the office with a real brass pair. Send the message.
In my opinion, Hammer would have been a perfect example to be made of. He's not a star, but he's not a slouch either.
Send him off for 10 games and suddenly everyone in the league is on their toes.
                        They'd think "That guy's a first-time offender and he got 10???"
All the Rats out there would definitely think twice.

But in the end, Hammer got two games. Conveniently he'll return as the Hawks play the Sabres again. So I guess the NHL is sending a message; 'take care of your own problems because we can't".
But they'll be the first to scream foul when that game turns into the 2nd coming of Slap Shot. The fans will love it, no doubt. But it goes against the NHL's attempts to clean up the sport. Talk about mixed signals.

The league also does not want to admit that the grabbing and holding they had before helped slow down players in a lot of cases from teeing off on the defense man on dump ins.

The game is faster and bigger, and I put alot of blame of these concussions on player attitudes and the NHLPA not educating their players better and also pushing for safer work place environments. Fehr gets in there I'm sure this will be something of a top priority.

Pominville smashed his head on the board and if you watch the replay the glass ever moved. The boards and glass need some play in them.

What i do find odd so far this year is a few of the concussions that have occurred looked to occur on very normal hockey hits. Scary stuff.

Which makes me wonder if those players had concussions in the past they didn't even know about?
In some cases, the hit didn't look like much, but in Tavares' case he didn't see it coming. Those are usually the worse.

I like your comment on the PA. They definitely need to take a bigger stand on this issue. They're cannibalizing themselves right now.

Not sure the Tavares one could have been avoided if you watch the full play. I was suprised he got a concussion from that as well. But honestly the way these guys hit the ice and boards with their head the PA and NHL really needs to come down with better equipment rules, softer padding and as simple as tight chin straps. Most guys have mouth guards which can help prevent concussions too.

What's scary as well is how little we actually know about the concussion.

Sabres lost today 1-0 in OT. We were dominated the whole game. Devils' D was insane, and they got so many shots off. Surprised it was 0-0 going into OT. Shame.
