Re: The Official 2010-11 Stanley Cup Playoffs Talk Thread
Bob Gainey, Doug Jarvis, Steve Kasper, Guy Carbonneau, Rick Meagher: these are most definitely NOT "offensive players that happen to play more defensively". Starting with Gilmour and Fedorov in the early 90s, writers arbitrarily decided to award it to the best two-way player. But the definition never changed.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Except it's not. The Selke is supposed to be for the best defensive forward, period. Not the best two-way forward. Not the best defensive player who also has 60+ points.

Forgot to do OT winners so I'll jump in real quick.
Marleau/Zetterberg
About that high-sticking penalty on Detroit, where the hell was the blood on Wallin? I didn't see it at all.Originally posted by bradtxmaleI like 6 inches. Its not too thin and not too thick. You get the support your body needs.

Yeah, you sorta get that feeling, huh? Like if the Wings didn't steal this one tonight, it was gonna end badly...I mean, it's just one game, but....Comment

It's not even about the officiating, either.
I mean, it IS the officiating. They're transparent in their bias against Detroit as it is (league mandate), but it's bigger than that. It's not like the Oilers trapping the Wings into oblivion in 06, or the Ducks gooning their way past them in 07, or the Penguins dragging their slightly less dead corpses across the finish line just ahead of the "deader" Wings in 09.
The Sharks are simply better at the Red Wings' style than the Red Wings are. Babcock is a great coach, and I love him - but it's no coincidence that things have spiraled out of control since McLellan left for San Jose after the Cup win in 08. The Wings were a viciously efficient machine in the 2008 postseason. Awesome power play, awesome penalty kill, awesome in the faceoff circle. In the last three postseasons, that's all gone away and been replaced by incompetence; meanwhile the Sharks have suddenly developed all three. Convenient that those three years have been with McLellan gone from Detroit and in San Jose.
The fatigue was an obvious factor in last year's series (along with the laughably lopsided power plays), but this year it's even more obvious: the Sharks are out-Detroiting Detroit. The window for this team to win another Cup apparently closed on that fateful night in June two years ago. Now they're the oldest team in the West, their top two defensemen are on their last legs, their top two forwards are on the wrong side of 30, and the prospects they have pegged to step up and replace their current stars are far from sure things.
Time has caught up to the Red Wings.Comment

Me neither. I'd like a little higher standard for 4-minute HS minors. if I can't see blood on a 40" HD screen, it's 2 minutes.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that.
